Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings dropped the series finale, 6-1, to the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Sunday afternoon at Ashford University Field. Four hits were all Clinton (21-18) could muster in a quite afternoon at the plate.
The Kernels (19-19) tallied the game's first run in the top of the first inning off of LumberKings starter Oliver Jaskie. Jordan Gore tripled with one out in the inning and scored on an Alex Kiriloff sacrifice fly to center, one of his three RBI in the game.
The lead did not hold up for long as the LumberKings answered in the bottom of the second inning. Ryan Costello singled off Kernels starter Brusdar Graterol to open the inning and moved to third when the LumberKings loaded the bases with one out. Eugene Helder then tied the game with an RBI infield single.
The run was the only one Graterol (2-0), or the Kernels, allowed over his five innings of work. He picked up his second win of the season while allowing all four of Clinton's hits, all singles, issuing five walks, and striking out six.
The Kernels took the lead for good in the top of the third inning. Three straight singles off Jaskie (1-4) and a sacrifice fly broke the 1-1 tie and would be enough to hand Jaskie with his fourth straight loss.
Cedar Rapids added one more run off Jaskie in the top of the sixth before pulling away with a three-run top of the ninth. Kiriloff capped the scoring in the ninth inning with a two-run home run into the Lumber Lounge in right for his seventh home run of the season.
The LumberKings will now welcome in the Burlington Bees for the first of three games on Monday night. Clinton will throw right-hander Ryne Inman (1-2, 4.69) while the Bees will tap righty Mitchell Traver (3-2, 2.70). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM. Fans looking to listen to the call of the game can hear Erik Oas at 6:15 PM with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI.
