Long Island Finds Way To Win, Barnstormers Streak Snapped

April 25, 2013 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

Long Island Ducks starter Matt Way twirled seven shutout innings on Thursday evening, handing the Lancaster Barnstormers their first loss of the season, 6-0, at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Correspondingly, the Ducks won their first game of 2013 in the series finale.

Way (1-0) yielded only four hits and did not walk a batter. He struck out five on the night and never allowed a Barnstormer to reach third base in the game. Jared Lansford and Eric Niesen worked one inning apiece to complete the shutout.

Lancaster starter Jay Buente (1-1) had retired seven straight when third baseman Kody Kirkland was unable to latch onto on a two-out grounder by Ray Navarrete in the third. Adam Bailey followed with a long single off the right field wall, chasing Navarrete to third, and the Ducks second baseman scampered home on a Buente wild pitch.

Another error, this time by Daryle Ward on a Bryant Nelson grounder opened the fourth. Buente followed that with a walk, and Joash Brodin made the Barnstormers pay with a three-run jolt to right, his second of the series. A single by Rian Kiniry, a sacrifice bunt and two wild pitches produced the fourth run of the inning.

The Ducks scratched lefty Nate Reed for a run in the ninth on a long double to left by Brodin and a single by Danny Perales.

The Barnstormers travel to Camden's Campbell's Field on Friday evening to open a nine-game road trip. Lancaster will send lefty Lenny DiNardo (1-0) to the hill to face right-hander Joshua Walter (0-1). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I-Heart Radio cellphone app beginning at 6:45.

NOTES: Long Island slugged five homers in the series, all from the left side of the plate...Lancaster pitching had not allowed a home run in the Camden series opening weekend...The Barnstormers remained tied with Sugar Land, who lost, 3-1, at Somerset...Blake Gailen singled in the sixth to extend his streak of reaching base to seven games.
