Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Charlotte Stone Crabs snapped a three-game losing skid with a 5-1 victory over the St. Lucie Mets on Saturday at Digital Domain Park.
After being the victim of a strong pitching performance a night prior, Charlotte got one of its own from lefty Kyle Lobstein.
Timely hitting allowed the Stone Crabs to take an early lead and add some insurance throughout the night. Reid Fronk finished 2-for-5 with a pair of run-scoring doubles to help put the game out of reach.
Lobstein (9-9) mastered the Mets for the second straight start. He tossed six blank frames and has now piled up 12 consecutive scoreless innings in those two starts against St. Lucie. Lobstein allowed just fix hits and did not walk a batter while striking out five batters.
With Lobstein providing the pitching, Charlotte's offense cracked the code against Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler in the second inning.
Wheeler (1-2) yielded a run-scoring single to Matt Hall that proved to be his only blemish. The right-hander, acquired from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for Carlos Beltran two weeks ago, worked five innings of one-run ball in taking the loss.
The late insurance runs proved to be valuable. Charlotte scored two in the seventh, thanks to the first of Fronk's run-scoring doubles and an RBI-single by Anthony Scelfo.
Two more Stone Crabs runs came across in the ninth. Fronk struck again with a double to plate the first, while Mark Thomas got into the act with a run-scoring two-bagger of his own.
Rylan Sandoval provided the only Mets run with an eight-inning solo-homer off Michael Jarman, his third against Charlotte this season.
Since the departure of Hak-Ju Lee on Wednesday, Ty Morrison has assumed the lead-off duties, a move that could not have come at a better time. Morrison went 2-for-5 and has now hit safely in seven of his last eight games after turning in his fourth multi-hit performance in those eight contests.
The series concludes on Sunday as the two teams travel to Charlotte Sports Park. The Stone Crabs sent C.J. Riefenhauser (0-0) to the mound against Mets righty Armando Rodriguez (3-4). First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
