Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release

ANN ARBOR, Michigan - The Muskegon Lumberjacks went toe-to-toe against some of the best young talent in the United States in the USNTDP Under-18 Team and came away with a hard-earned 3-1 victory tonight in their final trip to the Ann Arbor Ice Cube for the regular season.

The first period saw the USNTDP (12-25-5, 29 points) outshoot the Lumberjacks by a wide 20-6 margin, but Lumberjacks Goaltender Kevin Lindskoug (21-11-5) was up to the task early stopping everything that came his way in the opening frame.

Early in the second period at the 4:07 mark, Joe Cox would get the scoring underway with an unassisted tally as he created a USNTDP turnover into gold for his 16th goal of the season to make it 1-0 Lumberjacks. Later in the middle frame at the 15:06 mark, the USNTDP would knot the score even at 1-1 with a goal from Tyler Kelleher as took a fortunate bounce off a Lumberjacks defender in the low slot and fired it home top shelf. Evan Allen and Mike McCarron were credited with the assists on the Kelleher strike.

The score would remain even at 1-1 after two periods with the USNTDP Under-18 Team heavily outshooting the Lumberjacks, 36-12.

The Lumberjacks (27-15-9, 63 points) would assert themselves offensively in the third period and tally a go-ahead goal at the 2:17 mark from Chad McDonald as he slid one home on his backhand past USNTDP Goaltender Blake Weyrick (1-2-1) for his 11th of the season that was assisted by Jeff Kubiak and Riley Alferd. The defense and goaltending from Lindskoug would continue to hold strong as the USNTDP continued the fire shots from every angle, but come up empty.

Muskegon would get an insurance goal at the 16:58 mark with Cox's second of the night and 17th of the season on a breakaway attempt to cap off the 3-1 road victory. Mason Jobst and Cullen Hurley would get the helpers on the Cox breakaway goal. The Under-18 Team would pull Weyrick for the extra attacker with 1:04 remaining in regulation, but could not get any closer on the scoreboard.

The Lumberjacks allowed a season-high 53 shots on goal to their 22, but Kevin Lindskoug stopped a season-high 52 shots to earn his 21st victory of the season. Joe Cox led the offensive attack with his two goals on night, and both teams were a combined zero-for-five on the power play with the Lumberjacks going empty on two man advantage opportunities. Muskegon is now 2-0-0 against the Under-18 Team this season with two meetings remaining and both at the L.C. Walker Arena. The Lumberjacks are also 6-0-0 overall against the USNTDP program.
