Lima strong in Bears win

NEWARK, N.J. - Former Major League 21-game winner Jose Lima pitched six innings of shutout ball as Newark downed visiting Nashua 4-2 in Atlantic League baseball action held on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The Bears bats came alive as well as the team pounded out nine hits on its way to snapping a two-game losing skein.

Rickey Henderson led things off with the 81st leadoff home run of his career, a shot to left field off Nashua starter Paxton Crawford (1-1). The home team tacked on another run in the first frame on Wil Quintana's RBI single to right field. Newark went up 3-0 in the third inning on Danny Clyburn's first round-tripper of 2003. The Bears (4-2) extended their advantage to 4-0 in the sixth inning as Paul Esposito tripled home Jason Torres. Nashua (4-2) cut into Newark's lead in the seventh inning on Damian Sapp's solo home run to left field and in the eighth inning on another solo home run, this one by left fielder Glenn Murray. The Newark trio of Damon Ponce Deleon, Andy Hazlett and Manny Barrios combined to work the final three innings with Barrios going the final 1.1 to notch his first save of the season. Lima (2-0) struck out seven and walked one in six full innings, allowing just one Pride runner to advance past second base. Crawford worked the first five innings before giving way to Tommy Taylor and John Roper. Torres led the Bears offensive charge with three hits while Clyburn and Quintana had two each. No Pride player had more than one hit.

For the contest, Newark outhit its visitors 9-7 while each side committed one error. The Bears left six men on and the Pride stranded nine in a game which took 2:36 to complete.

Newark and Nashua conclude their three-game mid-week series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. with Newark's Steve Gagliano opposing Nashua's Bubba Hardwick.
