New York Liberty News Release
NEW YORK LIBERTY (7-19) vs. INDIANA FEVER (4-23)
Saturday, August 4 - White Plains, NY (Westchester County Center)
3:00 PM (ET) - TV: League Pass, MSG+
The New York Liberty were on the losing end of a 92-77 matchup against the Connecticut Sun in their first game back from the All-Star break. They will look to snap a five-game skid when they face the Indiana Fever on Saturday. The matchup will serve as the first of a final regular season four-game homestand.
QUICK HITS
Tina Charles' 19.9 points per game rank seventh the league (as of 8/3).
Charles' 7.1 rebounds per game slot her 12th in the league (as of 8/3).
Kia Nurse's ranks top-10 among rookies with 8.4 points per game (as of 8/3).
Nurse is shooting 86.4 percent from the free throw line, good for eighth in the league (as of 8/3).
Brittany Boyd's 5.4 assists per contest are tied for fourth in the WNBA (as of 8/3).
Boyd ranks top-10 in the league in steals per game with 1.4 (as of 8/3).
Bria Hartley ranks top-12 in the league with 3.7 assists per game (as of 8/3).
The Liberty emerged victorious in the season's first two matchups against the Fever (6/2 and 6/10).
Nurse scored a game-high 34 points against the Fever earlier this season (6/2), setting the Liberty rookie scoring record.
KEY MATCHUP
After missing the season's first matchup against Indiana, Sugar Rodgers made up for lost time in the second game of the season series. The sharp-shooter scored a team-high 16 points in a New York victory, draining a season-high five threes. She'll match up with the Fever's deep threat, rookie Victoria Vivians, who hit three of her own from behind the arc the last time these teams met.
LAST MEETING
On June 10, 2018, Marissa Coleman nailed a three with 16 seconds remaining to propel the Liberty to a 78-75 victory over the Fever at the Westchester County Center.
Sugar Rodgers led New York with 16 points, hitting five of her nine attempts from deep. Four other Liberty players joined her in double figures.
Kelsey Mitchell paced Indiana with 19 points, but her game-tying three-point attempt with two seconds remaining fell short.
STAT-SHEET STUFFER
Brittany Boyd's emergence has been one of the biggest stories of the season for the Liberty, and the fourth-year floor general continues to shine. With season averages of 6.2 points, 5.5 assists, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.4 steals, she is one of just four players in the league averaging 6.0 points, 5.0 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game.
MODEL OF CONSISTENCY
One of the league's surefire stars, Tina Charles, has been as consistent as they come for the Liberty this season. The veteran, who ranks second in the league in minutes per game with 33.1, has scored in double figures in all but one game this season, and she has brought down at least eight rebounds on 12 occasions.
START WITH SOME SUGAR
Injuries have taken their toll on the New York lineup of late, but as playing time has opened up, new starters have made a significant impact. Sugar Rodgers has started the past three games for the Liberty, and over that span the guard is averaging 12.3 points in 26.3 minutes per game, shooting 50 percent from the field while draining seven threes.
REJECTION UPTICK
Neither the Liberty nor the Fever are known for gaudy block numbers- they check in at 11th and 12th in the league, respectively. However, New York has had Indiana's number at the rim this season, as they average five rejections per game against their Eastern Conference rival. Tina Charles has spearheaded the movement, swatting 2.5 shots per matchup.
