Lemyre Plays Overtime Hero as Dubuque Wins 3-2

January 2, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

Tristan Lemyre scored a beauty of a goal late in the overtime period and Dubuque notched back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Hobie Hedquist made 30 stops for his second victory in as many starts. Dubuque's first overtime game of the season was a success in front of their largest crowd of the year.

-The Saints and Bucs didn't have much to show offensively in the first period as the two teams combined for just 14 shots on goal. Des Moines had nine of the 14, but neither team had more than two solid chances in the period.

-Hobie Hedquist was strong between the pipes in the first period as he turned away Alex Lafferiere twice in good scoring areas. The top scorer on the Bucs produced the two best chances of the period for Des Moines but was unable to beat the Saints rookie netminder.

-Dubuque's power play struggled in the first two periods as they managed just one shot on their first two opportunities. Des Moines registered five shots in their lone PP of the first 40 minutes.

-PJ Fletcher broke the ice at about the midway part of the second period. His fourth goal of the season gave Dubuque the lead. Robert Cronin made a great pass from below the circles and Fletcher finished far side to crack a scoreless draw.

-Hedquist was once again on the top of his game in the second period, stopping seven shots from the Bucs. Hedquist was able to make the saves fairly routinely as the Saints did a good job in front of their goalie, clearing out traffic to allow him to see the shots.

-Des Moines equalized less than six minutes into the third period to put the game right back to square one. It didn't last too long as Daniyal Dzhaniyev scored one of the goals of the year, dodging three Bucs on his way to a top shelf finish.

-A late power play from the Bucs tied things up again with six minutes left in regulation. Dubuque took another late penalty that carried over into overtime, but the Saints were able to kill it off.

Lemyre's overtime winner came with 1:40 left in the final period. Most of the overtime period was played four on four because of the power play carry over, but Lemyre notched the goal shortly into the three-on-three portion of the period.

-Dubuque will close out their weekend against the Chicago Steel as the two Eastern Conference foes battle at 3:05 on Sunday.
