Leilani Mitchell Returns to Mystics
Washington, D.C. - Washington Mystics General Manager and Head Coach Mike Thibault announced today that guard Leilani Mitchell has rejoined the team. Mitchell was first with Washington during the 2016 season.
"Leilani will be a terrific addition and perfect fit to our team. We loved having her when she was here before and everyone in the organization is thrilled to have her back," said Thibault. "Her leadership, ball handling, passing, and 3-point shooting will fit seamlessly with our style of play. On top of all that, she is one of the best teammates you could ask for."
Following the 2019 season, Mitchell became the first WNBA player to earn her second Most Improved Player of the Year award after averaging career highs in points (12.8), rebounds (3.0) and assists (4.0) per game.
Mitchell was selected in the second round (25th overall) of the 2008 WNBA draft by the Phoenix Mercury and was traded that year to the New York Liberty where she played for six seasons. Mitchell was named the WNBA's Most Improved Player in 2010 after averaging a then career-high 9.3 ppg and 3.8 apg. She spent the last three seasons (2017-1019) with the Mercury.
Mitchell holds career averages of 6.4 ppg, 2.1 rpg and 2.9 apg. She attended the University of Idaho before finishing her collegiate career at the University of Utah.
