Legends Complete Sweep of Drive with 4-2 Win
July 3, 2013 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
After two consecutive series victories, the Greenville Drive (7-7, 29-54) found themselves on the wrong end of a series on Wednesday, as the Lexington Legends (9-5, 42-40) completed a sweep with a 4-2 victory.
Bubba Starling came up with the big knock, as his two-run homer to left field off Drive reliever Gerardo Olivares (2-3) untied the game and gave Lexington a 3-1 lead.
The Drive took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first against Legends starter Crawford Simmons (1-1). Mookie Betts lined a leadoff single to right, advanced to second on a sac bunt and came in to score on Drew Turocy's single to left.
From that point on, Simmons stymied the Drive offense to get the victory. In six innings of work, he allowed four hits and one run while striking out five.
The Legends tied the game in the second inning on a fielder's choice and an error.
Cody Kukuk received a no-decision for the Drive despite a fine start. He went five innings and gave up three hits, an unearned run and two walks with seven strikeouts.
Lexington added an insurance run off Olivares in the seventh, as Terrance Gore walked and came all the way around to score on Raul Mondesi's double to right.
The Drive plated a run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Kevin Heller to make things interesting, but Mark Peterson struck out Dreily Guerrero with the tying run on base to end the game and pick up his ninth save.
Mondesi and Cameron Gallagher had two hits for the Legends, while Starling drove in two with his homer. Betts was the lone Greenville batter with a pair of hits.
The Drive will return home for a four-game series against the Savannah Sand Gnats beginning on Thursday. First pitch for the 4th of July game is at 6:05, with the City of Greenville's fireworks show occurring postgame. RHP Jacob Dahlstrand (1-4, 6.47) gets the start for the Drive in the opener, while the Sand Gnats will send RHP Matt Koch (5-3, 4.18) to the mound.
