Late Rally Dooms Quakes in Lake Elsinore
June 9, 2017 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Lake Elsinore, CA- It was an old fashioned pitchers' duel at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore on Thursday night, but the Quakes bullpen could not hold on late in a 3-1 loss to the Storm.
The loss, combined with a Lancaster win, pushed the Quakes a game back of the JetHawks in the South Division with 10 games left in the first half.
Yusniel Diaz provided all the offense for the Quakes with a solo home run in the sixth inning and it was all Caleb Ferguson needed to leave with the lead, but Tony Gonsolin could not continue his brilliant stretch that he had been on.
Entering the game, Gonsolin (2-3) had thrown 12 and two-thirds consecutive scoreless innings, but that streak ended at 14 straight innings. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Storm scored three runs off of Gonsolin on an RBI single by Chris Baker followed by a two-run triple by Edwin Moreno.
The Quakes went down in order in the top of the ninth and Jose Ruiz earned his second save of the season.
Ferguson was brilliant in his 10th start of the season for Rancho Cucamonga (31-29). He threw six scoreless innings, only yielding four hits and striking out five while not walking a batter. He left with a 1-0 lead, but Storm starter Jacob Nix was almost as good on the other end for Lake Elsinore (30-30).
Nix fired seven innings, just giving up the one run off of the Diaz home run, and only allowing six hits while striking out seven. Jose Castillo (2-2) earned the win by tossing a scoreless eighth inning.
The loss dropped the Quakes to 0-4 at The Diamond this season and all losses came when Lake Elsinore scored the go-ahead run in their final at-bat. The season series is now tied as both teams have won five games each.
The Quakes will be back in action Friday, June 9th, at Lake Elsinore for the second game of the four-game series at 7:00 pm. Right-hander Dennis Santana (3-3) is scheduled to start for the Quakes while the Storm will counter with righty Jesse Scholtens (1-1).
The Quakes will return home on Monday, June 12th, against the Inland Empire 66ers. It will be Social Media Monday! The MVP gates will open at 3:45 and the main gates will open at 4:05. Tickets are available at 909-481-5000 or rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
