Late Penalty, Goal Force NYCFCÃÂ to Settle for Hudson River Derby Draw

New York City FC played out the first Hudson River Derby of the season at Red Bull Arena. The visitors took the lead in the first half after a well-worked goal allowed Taty Castellanos to score. The second half saw NYCFC reduced to 10-men when Keaton Parks was sent off. Unfortunately, the two sides had to share the spoils after a controversial penalty deep into injury time.

New York City FC lined up for the first Hudson River Derby of the season on Wednesday night at Red Bull Arena.
Head Coach Ronny Deila opted to start the game with a back-three formation, and introduced Anton Tinnerholm and Alex Callens into the starting XI in place of Chris Gloster and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi.
The first chance of the game fell to Taty Castellanos inside five minutes when he was found at the back post from a Jesús Medina corner, but the Argentine was unable to keep his effort down.
At the other end, Patryk Klimala found Omir Fernandez in the 8th minute with a pullback, but the 22-year-old's attempt was comfortable for Sean Johnson.
Both sides struggled to establish any real chances early on, but Johnson was required to parry a shot away in the 22nd minute from Wikelman Carmona.
When the ball did settle, NYCFC created the better chances with Maxi Moralez firing a low strike at Carlos Coronel's goal.
The 29th minute saw NYCFC's best chance of the half when a high cross was well taken down by Anton Tinnerholm.
He managed to quickly get a shot off, only for the Red Bulls' keeper to deflect it over.
NYCFC were now knocking on the door, and the pressure told two minutes later when a turnover in the Red Bulls' half was pounced upon by Maxi Moralez.
He played in his compatriot Castellanos, who calmly side-footed it into the goal.
The second period began with a change in system for the hosts - mirroring the back three system implemented by Ronny Deila.
The early exchanges followed a similar pattern to the first half with neither team able to establish a real rhythm.
Castellanos remained a persistent thorn in the side of the Red Bulls' defenders, with his hold up play a major asset.
In the 66th minute a cute flick by Medina allowed Tinnerholm to send in a low cross that Keaton Parks steered only narrowly wide.
NYCFC thought they had a second in the 67th minute when a freekick fo the back post found Castellanos free.
The goal was unfortunately ruled out, however, with Maxime Chanot adjudged to have fouled Kyle Duncan.
NYCFC were controversially reduced to ten men in the 75th minute when Parks challenged Dru Yearwood.
In response, Deila turned to his bench and introduced Nicolás Acevedo in place of Medina as they sought to change system.
The game was fast becoming a feisty affair with tackles flying as both teams collected yellow cards.
As we crept into injury time NYCFC made a second change, introducing Malte Amundsen for Gudi Thórarinsson.
The Boys in Blue were defending doggedly and even managed to fashion a late chance when Amundsen ran down the left and found Moralez free in the box.
NYCFC were then controversially reduced to nine men deep into stoppage time when VAR deemed Chanot had handled the ball inside the box.
The decision also handed Red Bulls a penalty. The game finished 1-1 and meant both teams took a point away from the game.
