Late Burst Is Not Enough in 14-9 Loss

April 8, 2018 - California League (CalL1)
Modesto Nuts News Release

Lancaster, CA. - A late rally by the Nuts fell short in a 14-9 loss against the JetHawks on Sunday afternoon at The Hangar.

With the loss, the Modesto Nuts (1-3) fell in the season-opening, four-game series with the Lancaster JetHawks (3-1).

The Nuts initially erased a four-run deficit when Logan Taylor smacked a three-run homer to cap a five-run fifth. Taylor went 2-for-5 with a double.

That lead was short-lived. Nuts' starter Danny Garcia (L, 1-0) surrendered a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to Roberto Ramos which put the JetHawks back on top. The JetHawks added to the lead with seven unanswered runs. Garcia worked 4 2/3 innings allowing seven runs on nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts in his California League debut.

Down by six entering the eighth, the Nuts' offense mounted another comeback. Bryson Brigman and Joe Rizzo each delivered two-out, two-run singles to pull the Nuts to within two.

That momentum was given right back in the bottom of the eighth when Roberto Ramos smashed his third two-run homer before Reid Humphreys (S, 2/2) shut the door with a perfect ninth inning.

Brandon Gold (W, 1-0) went six innings for the JetHawks and allowed five runs on eleven hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

The Nuts open a three-game set with the Inland Empire 66ers on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 6:50 p.m. Listen live online on your phone, tablet or PC.
