Last Week around the Leagues

This past week the National Women's Soccer League announced it will hold a 25-game tournament in Utah starting on June 27th, the American Hockey League's newest team in Nevada unveiled its name as the Henderson Silver Knights, and World TeamTennis revealed it will hold its 45th season at The Greenbrier "America's Resort" in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Highlights from this week are from the National Women's Soccer League, Major Arena Soccer League, Major League Soccer, World TeamTennis, Major League Rugby, NBL Canada, NBA G League, Women's National Basketball Association and National Lacrosse League.

SOCCER

National Women's Soccer League

The National Women's Soccer League announced that the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup presented by P&G and Secret will mark the return to action for all nine clubs. The 25-game tournament will kick off on June 27, 2020 at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah. While spectators will not be in attendance, fans can catch all the action via CBS All Access with the opener and championship game also airing live on CBS.

Utah to host NWSL tournament in June and July. No fans in the stands, but professional women's soccer is returning to Utah in a big way.

Major Arena Soccer League

We are pleased to announce that David Bascome has been named Head Coach of the Baltimore Blast and will lead our soccer camps this summer. David will work with our Vice President and General Manager, Gianni Tumminello, to handle player signings and operational duties. Danny Kelly has moved on. Bascome has been involved in professional soccer for the last 28 years. He has spent the last 16 seasons with the Blast, winning 8 championships, 3 as a player and 5 as an assistant coach.

David Bascome has been named head coach of the Baltimore Blast and will lead the organization's soccer camps this summer.

Canadian Premier League

Atletico Ottawa and official league kit provider, Macron, a leader in the international teamwear market, unveils their 2020 season Home custom-designed playing kit. The Club's inaugural kit incorporates the symbolism and identity of the globally recognized club within the design. The jersey is inserted with unique details and a graphic symbol that is representative of Atletico's identity that brings 100 plus years of know-how to the domestic soccer landscape while paying homage to the Ottawa-Gatineau region.

Major League Soccer

HOCKEY

American Hockey League

Vegas Golden Knights Chairman and CEO Bill Foley announced that the AHL Henderson franchise will be known as the Henderson Silver Knights. The Silver Knights' NHL parent club, the Vegas Golden Knights, shared the team name, logo and brand story during a one-hour live show on KSNV NBC Las Vegas that was also streamed across their social platforms on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Twitch. The announcement comes after Black Knight Sports and Entertainment, LLC, who also own and operate the Golden Knights, purchased an AHL membership in February 2020.

The Vegas Golden Knights announced the name of the minor league hockey team that will be playing out of Henderson ---- it's the Silver Knights.

The American Hockey League announced that forward Gerry Mayhew of the Iowa Wild has been voted the winner of the Les Cunningham Award as the AHL's most valuable player for the 2019-20 season. The LA Kings will not renew the contract of Ontario Reign Head Coach Mike Stothers, which is set to expire on June 15. Stothers has led the AHL affiliate for the last six seasons, including five with the Ontario Reign (2015-16 to 2019-20) and one with the Manchester Monarchs (2014-15).

Ontario Hockey League

The Canadian Hockey League is proud to announce that 2020 NHL Draft prospect Marco Rossi of the Ottawa 67's is the 2019-20 recipient of the CHL Top Scorer of the Year Award. Rossi led all players with 120 points including 39 goals and 81 assists in 56 games helping the 67's finish first in the Ontario Hockey League's regular season standings for the second straight season.

OTHER SPORTS

World TeamTennis

World TeamTennis announced it has committed to play the entirety of its 45th season at The Greenbrier "America's Resort" in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. This will be the first major professional tennis league to resume operations since the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19. All told, the 2020 World TeamTennis season will showcase a 63-match regular season over 19 consecutive days from July 12-30, with the WTT Playoffs to follow on Aug. 1 (WTT Semifinals) and Aug. 2 (WTT Final). The top four teams from WTT's regular season standings will advance to the WTT Playoffs.

The 45th season of World TeamTennis starts July 12 exclusively at Greenbrier Resort.

Major League Rugby

Major League Rugby (MLR) announced that Los Angeles has officially been awarded a franchise for the 2021 MLR season. The new team is called the LA Giltinis, named after a premium cocktail based on the Martini. Ownership of the LA Giltinis will primarily reside with Loyals Rugby, a Rugby investment company founded in Australia. The LA Giltinis will be based in Venice Beach, are in discussions with Los Angeles Coliseum to be their home stadium, working with UCLA to develop their High-Performance facility and will extend significant investment to youth Rugby in the region.

BASKETBALL

National Basketball League of Canada

The National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that Jarius Holder of the Sudbury Five has been named Newcomer of the Year for the 2019-20 season. Holder, who was a unanimous top selection amongst coaches for the award finished with a scoring average of 19.7 points per game on 49.5 FG% Prior to joining the Sudbury Five, the 2019-20 Sixth Man of the Year played internationally with the British Basketball League for two seasons.

Northwoods League

An innovative contingency plan for the resumption of Northwoods League games this summer is set to become a reality in Bismarck, North Dakota as the Bismarck Larks unveiled their Larks Smart Start Plan yesterday afternoon. The Northwoods League will be playing baseball once again when the Bismarck Larks, the Bismarck Bull Moose, and the Bismarck Flickertails take the field this summer at Bismarck Municipal Ballpark.

Frontier League

The Frontier League's Board of Directors and General Managers have all been meeting weekly since mid-March. All clubs have also been in contact with their state/provincial governments, local health departments and medical professionals. The League's goal is to play as much of a 2020 season as possible. However, at this date there is too much uncertainty to set an opening date.
