Toledo Mud Hens News Release

Toledo Mud Hen Manager Larry Parrish has been named the 2005 International League Manager of the Year. The Hens clinched the IL West Division Championship with a 6-2 win against Louisville on Monday night (August 29). This marks the 2nd IL West Division title for Toledo in the last four years (2002).

The 51-year-old Parrish is in his third consecutive season as Manager of the Hens (he also managed Toledo for a portion of the 1994 season). Parrish has an overall record of 270-271 as a Toledo manager.

Parrish becomes the first Toledo Manager to win the award since Jack Tighe garnered the title in 1967 & 1968. The 1967 season was the first season the award was given.

Parrish played 19 professional seasons and appeared in a total of 1,891 Major League games with Montreal (1974-1981), Texas (1982-1988), and Boston (1988). Parrish hit 20 or more home runs five times during his playing days and was named to two All-Star teams (1979 & 1987).

Curtis Granderson has been the offensive spark all season for the Toledo Mud Hens. A member of the 2004 Eastern League Post-Season All-Star team, the 24-year-old has displayed a rare blend of speed, defense, and power for the Mud Hens in 2005. Currently in his second stint this season with Detroit, Granderson has hit .267 with 4 HR and 9 RBI in 17 games for the Tigers. Granderson hit .290 in 111 Toledo games with 29 doubles, 13 triples, and 15 home runs.

The All-Star teams were chosen by media representatives, club field staffs, and club and league administrators.

Toledo begins the quest for the Governors' Cup on Tuesday, September 7 at Norfolk. The Hens will play game #3 of the first round at Fifth Third Field on Friday, September 9th at 7:00 PM. Games #4 and #5 would also be played in Toledo if necessary on September 10 & 11.
