Lancers Could Not Complete Comeback in Loss to Sioux Falls
SIOUX FALLS, SD. - The Lancers came back from the holiday break to meet with the Sioux Falls Stampede, who currently sit in 7th place in the western conference, for the third time this season. The Lancers have had nothing but success against the Stampede this year, dating back to their home-and-home series back in mid-November, as Omaha took both wins by scores of 5-2 and 4-1.
The first period was even in the shot count, but lopsided on the scoreboard. It took over 13 minutes for Sioux Falls to net their first goal of the night, as Garrett Pinoniemi got a great feed from Daniel Russell and placed a beautiful shot over the blocker of Omaha goaltender, Mason Kucenski. Making it a 1-0 game with 6:55 left in the opening period.
Just over a minute and a half later, the Stampede struck again.
Easton Zueger scored his first goal of the season, with the same shot Pioniemi had just 90 seconds earlier. This time, with the feed from Clint Levens, making it a 2-0 game with just under five minutes left in the period.
The final goal of the period came shorthanded for the Stampede, as Russell picked up his second point of the night. Max Rud found Cole Miller in their defensive zone, who then fed Russell at center ice. He was in all alone and beat Kucenski blocker side, making it a 3-0 game heading into the first intermission.
The second period sparked some offense from the Lancers.
Omaha found themselves on the man advantage within the first two minutes of the period, allowing their power-play line to get to work.
Following a Sioux Falls clear, Matt Basgall retrieved the puck from Kucenski, and connected on a stretch pass up to center ice to Garrett Wright. Upon entering the attacking zone, fed Jared Wright with a saucer pass, allowing him to peel towards the net and beat Stampede goaltender, Noah Grennan five-hole. That goal cut the lead to 3-1 in favor of Sioux Falls, and the two squads took that score into the second intermission.
The third period was another hard fought one for the Lancers, outshooting Sioux Falls 11-6 on the period, and eventually 35-19 in total.
Grennan continued to play great between the pipes for the Stampede, only allowing one goal in the third period which was scored on a redirect from Cade Ahrenholz. The play developed from Owen Fowler finding Basgall at the point, leading to the shot that Ahrenholz got his stick on, giving him his seventh goal of the season.
Even with the extra attacker, the Lancers could not net another goal, leaving them with a 3-2 loss to Sioux Falls.
Following the final buzzer, Owen Fowler cross checked Brandon Chabrier giving him a 5-minute major, and a game misconduct. Meaning we will be without him in our next matchup.
This loss brings the Lancers to 13-7-2-1 on the season, as they still obtain their third-place spot in the western conference.
The Lancers will travel to Sioux City to take on the Musketeers on New Year's Eve for another western conference battle. That game can be caught on MixLR and HockeyTV.
