Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - In the finale of a three-game series on Friday night, the Charlotte Knights (52-61) pounded out 10 hits and scored eight runs to rout the Gwinnett Braves (48-65), 8-2. Playing in front of a Coolray Field crowd of 8,369, Atlanta Braves' outfielder B.J. Upton went 1-for-5 with a double and three strikeouts in his third rehab start for the G-Braves.

Gwinnett starter Omar Poveda (L, 5-7) was roughed up over 6.0 innings, allowing seven runs, four earned on six hits. He walked three while fanning seven.

On the other side, Charlotte starter Charlie Leesman (W, 3-1) was on point. The southpaw tossed 7.0 innings, allowing five hits and one earned run. He set down 10-straight G-Braves at one point, recording his third win of the season.

Charlotte got off to a great start, scoring two runs in the first inning and two more in the second. Travis Ishikawa tripled home two in the first, while Avisail Garcia singled home two in the top of the second inning off of Poveda.

Poveda settled down after the second inning, retiring 11 batters in a row from the top of the third to the end of the sixth. However, he would fall apart in the seventh. He walked Bryan Anderson to start the inning, and after an error by shortstop Luis Nunez put runners on second and third, Carlos Sanchez singled to score both baserunners, extending the lead to 6-0. Garcia capped the Knights' scoring, hitting a two-run homer to right field off of reliever Joe Bisenius to make it 8-0.

The G-Braves scored a run in the seventh and one in the ninth. In the seventh inning, Stefan Gartrell doubled with one out and scored on an RBI single by Joe Leonard. In the ninth, Gartrell took a 2-0 fastball from right-hander Deunte Heath over the left field fence to make it 8-2.

Heath worked the final 2.0 innings in relief of Leesman, yielding a run on two hits while striking out five.

At the plate for Gwinnett, Phil Gosselin led the way with a 2-for-4 game to extend his hitting streak to four games. In the three-game series, Gosselin went 6-for-12 with a double, run scored and one RBI. Gartrell went 2-for-4 with his seventh home run of the year and one RBI.

Garcia paced the Knights, going 3-for-4 with his sixth Triple-A home run of the season, two runs scored and three RBIs. The former Detroit Tiger and Toledo Mud Hen started for the first time since being traded to the Chicago White Sox in a three-team deal that involved pitcher Jake Peavy. Sanchez went 3-for-5 as well, adding two runs and two RBIs.

The Gwinnett Braves will hit the road and open a two-game series against the Durham Bulls on Saturday night. First pitch from Durham Bulls Athletic Park is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Kameron Loe (4-2, 3.19) will take the ball for the G-Braves in a match-up against left-hander Mike Montgomery (5-5. 4.26) of the Bulls. The radio broadcast will air on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM with Tony Schiavone calling the play-by-play.

The next G-Braves home game is Friday, August 9, a 7:05 PM game against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Tickets for all remaining 2013 Gwinnett Braves home games are on sale now by visiting the Coolray Field Box Office, calling (678) 277-0340 or by purchasing online at gwinnettbraves.com.
