Charlotte Knights News Release

FORT MILL, S.C. --The Charlotte Knights defeated the Durham Bulls 12-7 in a one-game series at Knights Stadium in front of a season-high 8,079 fans Saturday night. Starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy, already leading the league in strikeouts, added 11 more to bring his season total up to 40 and earn the win for Charlotte.

Center fielder Brian Anderson led the Knights with two hits, one home run, one RBI and one run scored in five at-bats on a night where everyone in the lineup earned a hit and everyone crossed the plate to score a run. Five Knights players had two hits as Knights hitters tallied a season-high five home runs.

The Bulls scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the first as McCarthy dealt the lead-off walk to center fielder Joey Gathright and a two-run home run shot to short stop B. J. Upton. McCarthy then retired the next six consecutive batters, earning his first six strikeouts of the night.

The Knights scored six runs in the bottom of the second. The first batter of the inning, Anderson stepped to the plate and knocked the solo home run to deep left. First Baseman Jorge Toca then hit a single, and third baseman Jamie Burke notched the Knights' second home run of the game to make the score 3-2. Short stop Pedro Lopez and left fielder Scott Bikowski both reached base on singles, and designated hitter Greg Norton followed with a three-run home run up the middle to put the Knights ahead 6-2.

The Bulls added another run in the top of the third to make the score 6-3, and the Knights added two more in the bottom. Anderson reached base on his second hit of the evening, a single to left, and two batters later, catcher Raul Casanova hit the Knights' fourth home run to put Charlotte up 8-3.

The Knights added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Second baseman Felix Martinez began the inning with a double, and Bikowski added a single to send him home. Right fielder Joe Borchard hit the club's final home run of the game, making the margin 12-3.

Durham added four more runs in the seventh and eighth innings, as McCarthy gave up a solo home run in the seventh and reliever Josh Fields allowed the three-run home run in the eighth to reach the final 12-7.

Nonetheless, it was a productive night for the Knights on both sides of the ball as Charlotte defeated the Bulls 12-7. The Knights travel to Durham for a two-game series with the Bulls at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Knights right-handed Jon Adkins faces Bulls' right-handed Jason Phillips on Saturday, and Knights right-handed John Stephens faces Bulls' right-handed Jason Roach on Sunday.
