Knighthawks Name Captains for 2018-19 Season

Rochester Knighthawks News Release

The Rochester Knighthawks are proud to announce Scott Campbell as the team captain for the 2018-19 season, while Cody Jamieson, Paul Dawson, and Graeme Hossack will serve as the alternate captains. The Knighthawks named their captains prior to tonight's season opener against the Philadelphia Wings.

"Scott Campbell possesses all the qualities that you want in a leader," said Knighthawks Owner and General Manager Curt Styres. "He is one of the most respected players in the game and a class act."

The 37-year-old Campbell takes over the leadership position after having an "A" on his jersey the past two seasons. The defenseman has served as team captain one other time in his career, filling in for Sid Smith on Feb. 11, 2017. He takes over for Smith again, who enters the season on the injured reserved list.

"'Soupy' is the perfect man to keep the captaincy warm for Sid," said Knighthawks forward Cody Jamieson. "He has been an integral part of our defense and has learned first hand what it takes to lead this team from having played beside Sid for all these years."

Campbell joins a select fraternity that includes Paul Gait, Randy Mearns, Duane Jacobs, Mike Hasen, Regy Thorpe, Shawn Williams, Pat McCready, and Smith.

"I was a bit shocked when I was asked to wear the 'C' while Sid recovers," said Campbell. "We have a deep leadership group, so anyone of those guys could have been asked and it would have been an excellent choice. Then as it sank in on the drive home from practice. I started thinking of the past captains I have played for, 'Haser,' 'Willy,' 'Creds,' and Sid. They were amazing players and team leaders and, more importantly, quality human beings off the floor. I don't hold a candle to those leaders, but I am truly honored to be part of that group."

In eight years with the Knighthawks, Campbell has appeared in 130 games and collected 30 goals, 50 assists, and 564 loose balls. After signing with Rochester in 2011, he was named the team's Unsung Hero his first season. The following year, he helped the Knighthawks start a run of three straight championships (2012-14). In 2016, he received one of highest honors by being voted the team's Defensive MVP. Last season, the Markham, Ontario, native posted career highs in assists (14) and points (20). After last year's appearance in the 2018 NLL Cup Finals, Campbell will lead the team into the 25th Anniversary season with the goal of hoisting the trophy at the end of the season.

"It is a very big honor," he said. "Nothing compares to winning championships because that's why we play. The goal this year is the same after getting so close last season. But being named captain would rank first in my career if I am the first one to collect the Cup from (Commissioner) Nick Sakiewicz and then hand it to the team at the end of the year as champions. That's the ultimate vision. We have some work to do, but have the team to do it."

The group of alternate captains is led by Jamieson, who begins his seventh season in the role. Also entering his ninth season with Rochester, "Jammer" stands third all-time in team history in goals (225), assists (392) and points (617). In Knighthawks' playoff history, he ranks first in assists (51) and points (85), and second in goals (33).

"Cody is one of the best players ever to put on a Knighthawks uniform," said Knighthawks assistant coach Mike Accursi. "Whatever he says, he does and players follow him."

Jamieson is one of the most decorated players in franchise history, having received three All-Pro selections and the 2014 NLL MVP award. From 2012-14, he powered the Knighthawks' offense during the three championship seasons. In 2012 and 2013, he was named Championship Game MVP, becoming only the second player in NLL history to win back-to-back honors, joining John Tavares (1992-93). The Six Nations product is also a three-time team MVP.

Despite all the accolades, wearing a letter on the front of his jersey remains one of the ultimate distinctions.

"Anytime you're chosen as a leader of a team, it's an honor," he said. "I think that honor is intensified when it's such a prestigious team like the Knighthawks."

Dawson begins his first season as an alternate captain with the Knighthawks. In his previous six years in Rochester, the 33-year-old has played in 100 games and recorded 13 goals, 20 assists, and 343 loose balls. Known as one of the most durable players in the game, Dawson owns the 11th longest consecutive games played streak in NLL history at 128 games.

"'Pauly' plays a simple game for us," said Knighthawks head coach Mike Hasen. "He is a presence out there and a vocal leader. He backs up what he says by his play on the floor."

During his career, the 13-year pro has also spent time with the San Jose Stealth, Boston Blazers, and Philadelphia Wings. He was an alternate captain during his time with the Blazers and the Wings. The Oakville, Ontario, native arrived in Rochester in a 2012 trade with Philadelphia. In his first two seasons with the Knighthawks, he won back-to-back NLL Cups (2013-14).

Hossack will serve as an alternate captain for the second time in his career. During the 2018 National Lacrosse League Finals, he received the honor following an injury to team captain Sid Smith. It was a fitting honor for the player who the Knighthawks selected second overall in the 2015 NLL Entry Draft.

"He is one of those guys that people can really follow," said Knighthawks VP of Player Personnel Jody Gage. "His work ethic, on and off the field, is like no other. He is always trying to prove that he is the best defender in the game."

In 2017-18, the 25-year-old completed his third season tied for the league lead with 34 caused turnovers and a career-high 163 loose balls. Hossack also set career highs in goals (seven), assists (seven), and points (14). His teammates recognized his efforts by awarding him his second straight Knighthawks' Defensive MVP honor (2017 and 2017-18).

During the Knighthawks' postseason run, the Port Perry, Ontario, native scored four goals and notched one assist in five games. Hossack also finished second in the NLL with 50 loose balls and third in caused turnovers with seven. He was rewarded with his first NLL Defensive Player of the Year award. After a career season, he now enters 2018-19 as one of the team's alternate captains.

"I am very honored to be selected as an alternate captain for this season," said Hossack. "Over the past few years, we have had a great group of leaders. I will be joining an experienced group of guys, and I am looking forward to learning from each one of them."
