Knighthawks Driscoll Completes Trifecta with National Championship

August 24, 2011 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Rochester Knighthawks News Release

(Rochester)... National Lacrosse League veteran Chris Driscoll has experienced success at every level, including hoisting the Champion's Cup three times in the past 19 years. Although reaching the pinnacle of professional lacrosse, Driscoll has experienced even greater joy behind the bench.

The 39-year-old Fergus, Ontario, native was on the coaching staff of Team Ontario on August 6th when the kids captured the 2011 Warrior Pee Wee Lacrosse National Championship of Canada in Whitby. It was a thrill for the Rochester Knighthawks transition man.

"It was a lot of fun coaching and a different perspective," he said. "The kids were really excited."

What made Driscoll's third national championship gold medal even more meaningful was sharing it with his 11-year-old son Kyle. Kyle was a member of the 11-0 Team Ontario squad that won the title, which had kids from 13 different associations on its roster.

"It's tough being a father, but at the same time I have the best seat in the house," said Chris Driscoll. "He worked really hard and made the team."

Kyle has obviously learned his work ethic from his father, who will enter his 20th season of pro lacrosse in 2012. Chris Driscoll was acquired by the Knighthawks on February 5, 2010 and has played a season and a half with Rochester. In his professional career, he has notched 240 goals, 378 assists and 1,035 loose balls in 234 games. He has won three championships along the way: 1997, 2003 and 2005.

Driscoll has now won the same number of national titles as a coach. Team Ontario, who is coached by Tony Carvalho, has now won back-to-back titles. The tournament was the third straight worked by Driscoll and Carvalho. Driscoll also coached in the nationals in 2004 and helped his team to a gold medal.

This time, Team Ontario defeated the Iroquois team coached by Knighthawks Owner and General Manager Curt Styres. The Iroquois finished the tournament with an impressive 8-3 record and defeated the British Columbia team in the semifinals, 5-4 in overtime.

Driscoll hopes to be back with the Styres' owned Knighthawks in 2012 as Rochester focuses on building on last year's 10-6 record last season. Driscoll was part of a defense that helped the Knighthawks go from 5-5 to 10-6 and earn a berth in the NLL Playoffs.

"I never thought I would play 20 seasons, but I still feel great and I can still contribute," he said. "I want to be back in Rochester, they have a good thing going there."
