The Westchester Knicks (12-3), the official NBA G League affiliate of the New York Knicks, topped the visiting South Bay Lakers (6-8), 103-89, on December 5 at the Westchester County Center. The win makes seven straight-setting a new franchise record.
New Orleans Pelicans Flex Assignee Trevon Bluiett netted a career-high 29 points on 62.5-percent shooting. The reserve drained a game-high five triples on 45.5-percent shooting. Affiliate player Kadeem Allen reached double-figures for the third consecutive game tallying 19 points. Pelicans Flex Assignee Kenrich Williams added 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
Johnathan Williams led South Bay with 25 points. He also hauled 10 boards. Travis Wear scored 14 and raised for a rejection.
The Knicks held a lead as large as 14 and traded advantages with the Lakers seven times. The game also endured seven ties.
The Knicks are off to a better start than just a season ago. Through the team's first 15 games of the 2017-18 campaign, Westchester started 10-5.
Westchester is now 8-0 when it holds its opponent under 100 points and has done so for six of its last seven matchups.
I'VE GOT THE BLUI-ETT
Trevon Bluiett registered a career-high 29 points against South Bay (12/5). He was 10-of-16 (62.5%) from the field and 5-for-11 (45.5%) from three. His 10 field goals made, five three-pointers made, and four free-throws made were all career-bests. He has now attained double-figures in three of his last four games played.
DOIN' THE LITTLE THINGS
Devon Baulkman played 20-plus minutes in Westchester's last two games after falling below that threshold two games prior. In the span, Baulkman is averaging 6.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, including 2.5 on the offensive boards, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals. He also got to the line five times in the two-game window.
Kadeem Allen's 0-assist effort against South Bay (12/5) marked the first time this season the guard was unable to dish a dime. Through 34 games played with Maine last season, the guard averaged 5.9 assists and failed to distribute an assist once (@Erie 3/9/18). That same season, he rode a 33-game streak of registering at least one. Allen has tallied at least one assist in 47 of his 49 games played in the G League. Still in Westchester's last three, Allen is averaging 18.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.7 assists and is shooting 55.8-percent from the field.
ZAK IS BACK
The Westchester Knicks acquired Zak Irvin and waived Buay Tuach on December 6.
Irvin, 6'6, 215, appeared in 12 games for Westchester during the 2017-18 campaign earning six starts. In 30.6 minutes played per game, the Indiana native averaged 8.8 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 0.2 blocks. The guard shot 52.8-percent from the field and 50-percent from long range.
He delivered a career-high 16 points off the bench against Wisconsin in a 124-103 win on March 10, 2018.
When the Knicks outrebound their opponent, the team is 8-1.
TAKING CARE OF THE BALL
When Westchester causes more turnovers, the team is 7-1. When they commit more miscues, they are 4-2. Conversely, the team is 6-0 when they score more points off of turnovers.
RESERVE THE BEST FOR LAST
Westchester's bench scored a season-high 58 points against South Bay (12/5) contrasting the 45 points generated by the Knicks' starters. This was in large part to Trevon Bluiett's 29-point performance.
Sekou Wiggs scored nine points against South Bay (12/5) which matched his season-high (Lakeland 11/10). He netted three of his four tries from the field, went 2-for-3 at the charity stripe and drained a triple on Wednesday. He also registered three assists which was third most on the team.
STILL IMPACTING THE GAME
Against South Bay (12/5), Billy Garrett had a poor shooting night going just 1-for-6 on the evening. However, Garrett matched his career-high seven rebounds, which included one of the offensive glass, just the second time this season he was able to. He also dealt a team-high six dimes and corralled one steal in almost 33 minutes played without a single turnover. He finished with five points, just the fifth time he ended in single-figures this season.
KEEP IT UNDER 100
When Westchester holds its opponents to fewer than 100 points, the team is 8-0 on the season. Westchester has held six of its last seven opponents to under 100 points.
Coach Mike Miller, who has been with the Westchester Knicks for four years, is nine wins away from the 100-win mark. Under his direction, Westchester is 91-74 (.552).
HOME SWEET HOME
The Knicks are riding a five-game win streak at home. The team's longest skid at home has been two games.
The Knicks were 9-5 last season through the team's first 14 games. After 15 games, the team was 10-5.
Beginning in the 2017 offseason, NBA rosters expanded from 15 to 17 players with the addition of two spots for players under "Two-Way Contracts."
NBA teams may have up to two players under NBA Two-Way Contracts who will spend the bulk of the season in the NBA G League and not more than 45 days with their NBA team. Two-Way players are paid a corresponding daily amount based on the number of days they play in each league. Only players with four or fewer years of NBA service are able to sign Two-Way Contracts, which can be for either one or two seasons.
Allonzo Trier and Isaiah Hicks are both under Two-Way Contracts for Westchester.
LET ME SEE YOU FLEX
The NBA G League's flexible assignment system - which was instituted prior to the 2014-15 season - will continue to enable the independent NBA teams to assign players to the NBA G League for development or rehabilitation from injury. Trevon Bluiett is on flex assignment via the New Orleans Pelicans.
