Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA - (Monday, September 8, 2003) - The Richmond Kickers announced today the 2003 Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards. Goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale has been named the Supporters Choice MVP, which is voted on by the fans themselves, while the Players Choice MVP award goes to forward Kevin Jeffrey.
This is the first year since 2000 that the awards have been split after Jeffrey captured both honors in 2001 and former Kicker Marco Ferruzzi did the same in 2002. In 2000, the first year the awards were handed out, A-League Defender of the Year Scott Cannon and current San Jose Earthquakes forward Dwayne DeRosario shared the Players Choice Award, while current midfielder/defender Kevin Knight took home the Supporters Choice Award.
Pascale, in his second full season as the Kickers starting 'keeper, notched eight shutouts and recorded 110 saves while amassing an 11-9-4 record. He earned spots in the top 10 of all seven categories presented by United Soccer Leagues, including: GK minutes played (5th with 2,261), Saves (T-2nd with 110), Shutouts (T-7th with eight) and Goals Against Average (7th with 1.114 GAA).
Jeffrey, the Players Choice MVP in 2001 as well, led the 2003 squad in scoring with 10 goals and nine assists for 29 points. The Trinidadian forward also led the team in game-winning goals with four, and tied for third in the league in assists with nine. He now ranks second in three all-time Kickers statistical categories with 39 goals, 25 assists, and 103 points.
Final A-League Team of the Week Includes Two Kickers
In the final edition of the A-League Team of the Week, two Kickers garnered their first appearances on the weekly list. Midfielder Tony Williams tripled his goal total on the year by knocking home two goals in a 6-2 win over the Charlotte Eagles on August 30th. Long-time Kickers forward Rob Ukrop moved into second place on the team in points by notching two goals and an assist in the same game, to raise his season totals to six goals and three assists for 15 points.
