Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, MD-The Frederick Keys (65-70/34-32) completed a three game sweep of the Salem Red Sox (72-63/32-34) with a 6-4 win on Thursday night at Nymeo Field. With the sweep, the Keys lead increases to two games in the north division wild card race, and gives Frederick the head-to-head tie breaker. The Keys magic number to clinch a playoff berth is now two.

It was a back-and-forth battle, with the Red Sox striking first in the second. Jordan Betts singled and Tate Matheny double off of Ofelky Peralta. Both would score on a Chris Madera single later in the frame.

The Keys got both runs back in the bottom of the second on one swing of the bat. After a Yermin Mercedes walk, Jomar Reyes hit a two-run home run to tie the game at two.

Frederick would take the lead in the third. With one out, Jay Gonzalez singled and Ademar Rifaela doubled. That brought up Glynn Davis, who knocked a single into left field to push the score to 3-2.

The lead would not last long, as Salem recorded a single marker in the fourth. Victor Acosta doubled and advanced to third on a Madera sacrifice bunt. After Peralta got Nunez to ground out, Rivera tied up the game with a single to center field.

That score would change in the bottom of the frame. Reyes led off with a triple, and he scored on a Shane Hoelscher RBI single to right.

The two teams exchanged runs in the sixth. Nunez launched a home run on the first pitch he saw to lead off the Red Sox half of the frame. In the bottom of the inning, Mercedes put the Keys up for good with a leadoff home run of his own, making it 5-4 Keys.

Fredeick added an insurance run in the seventh with another RBI from Davis. Perez singled, and Chris Clare was hit by a pitch. After Gonzalez struck out, the Red Sox intentionally walked Rifaela to get to Davis. He then hit a sacrifice fly to make it 6-4.

Mitch Horacek (5-3) picked up the win, tossing just 0.1 innings and recording a strikeout. Harrison Cooney (0-2) took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings. Jefri Hernandez picked up his third save with the Keys, firing two innings of scoreless relief. On the night, four Keys relievers combined to fire 5.1 innings, allowing just one run.

The Keys begin their final four-game series of the regular season on Friday against the Potomac Nationals. Left-hander Brian Gonzalez (5-7, 5.05) will be on the mound for the orange and black. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., and can be heard on 1450 AM The Source, frederickkeys.com, and the TuneIn Radio App.

The Frederick Keys are the Advanced-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, and play their home games at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium. In 2016, the Keys received the Esurance Home Field Advantage Award for Carolina League after pacing the league in attendance for the fifth consecutive season. During that stretch, Frederick has also led all of Advanced-A baseball in attendance.
