Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels offense was nearly non-existent for most of the night, but it came alive at the right time in a 3-2 walk-off victory over the Beloit Snappers on Friday night. Niko Goodrum's walk-off RBI single to right field scored Travis Harrison from second base, sending the chilly crowd home happy with a Kernels 3-2 win. Moments earlier, Harrison laced a RBI double to the right-center gap that scored pinch runner Candido Pimentel and tied the game 2-2. Dalton Hicks led off the inning with a single to right before Pimentel was called upon.

The Kernels offense only had mustered three hits through eight innings, but finished with six hits on the night. Byron Buxton

had the longest hit of the night we he crushed his first Midwest League home run to 8th Avenue, well beyond the left field wall.

Buxton's homer led off the bottom of the 1st inning, giving the Kernels the early 1-0 lead.

Hudson Boyd was solid in his debut, going 4.2 innings. He allowed only 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 3 and walking 3. The lone

run he allowed came in the 2nd inning on an Aaron Shipman RBI single that scored Bruce Maxwell to tie the game 1-1.

Pitching dominated the majority of the ballgame. Beloit's Michael Ynoa started and went 3 innings, allowing 1 run. Then, Dakota Bacus was tremendous in relief. He went 5 innings, allowing 0 runs on only 2 hits. Bacus struck out 9 and walked 1.

Kernels reliever Steve Gruver went 3.1 innings, allowing 1 unearned run on 1 hit while striking out 2 and walking 2. Beloit took a 2-1 lead in the 8th inning after an Aaron Shipman leadoff walk. He stole 2nd base, went to 3rd base on a throwing error by Kernels catcher Tyler Grimes, and scored on Matt Olson's infield RBI single.

Brett Lee (1-0) struck out the side for the Kernels in the top of the 9th inning, setting up the walk-off, come-from behind win.

Stu Pudenz (0-1) pitched the 9th inning for Beloit, retiring only 1 of the 4 batters he faced.
