Kernels fall 4-2 in series opener at Burlington

BURLINGTON, Iowa - The Kernels offense was held to five hits, falling to the Burlington Bees 4-2 at Community Field. Burlington took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Nino Leyja drilled a two run shot over the wall in left field against Kernels starter P.J. Jang.
The Bees extended their lead to 4-0 in the sixth inning. With two outs John Nester singled to right. He then came home on a RBI double by Yordy Cabrera, making the score 3-0. Tyreace House then drove home Cabrera with a RBI single to right field.
Jang (1-5) went six innings and allowed four runs on nine hits. He struck out one and walked four. Manny Correa pitched two innings in relief, allowing no runs on one hit. He struck out four and walked none.
The Kernels plated two unearned runs in the seventh inning against Bees starter Jonathan Joseph. Ricky Alvarez reached second base to lead off the inning when Burlington's Jose Crisotomo dropped a fly ball in right field. Grichuk then drove home Alvarez with a RBI double, making the score 4-1. Grichuk went to third base on a Justin Bass fly out to center and came home on a passed ball by Bees catcher John Nester, cutting the Bees lead to 4-2.
Joseph (4-4) went seven innings for Burlington and allowed two unearned runs on five hits. He struck out two and walked none. Zack Thornton went the final two innings for his fifth save of the season.
The Kernels continue the commuter series at Burlington on Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. The Kernels return home on Saturday evening at 5:05 p.m. It will be Jimmy Buffett Night as the Cedar Island Band will perform after the game. Fans can enjoy a spectacular fireworks show after the Cedar Island Band performance.
