Kernels beat Wisconsin, 6-2 – Magic Number down to 3

August 25, 2008 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels took another step closer to the MWL playoffs with a 6-2 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Monday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, WI. The win makes the Kernels Magic Number now 3 for clinching a playoff spot and coupled with a Burlington loss, moves them to 3.5 games behind the first place Bees.

Kernels starter Jeremy Moore (10-6) allowed two runs on three hits and struck out six over six innings to win his 10th game of the season. Sammy Leon and Ysmael Carmona combined to allow three hits and strike out two over three scoreless innings of relief.

Hector Estrella led the Kernels offense, going 4-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Julio Perez was 2-5 with a double, home run and 2 RBI and Jeremy Moore was 1-4 with a triple and RBI. Gabe Jacobo extended his hitting streak to 13 games with an RBI single. Jacobo's streak is the longest by a Kernel this season.

Wisconsin reliever Joe Kantakevich (0-3) allowed four runs on five hits over 2.1 innings to take the loss. Alex Liddi was 2-4 with a double and Joe Dunnigan hit a 2 run HR for Wisconsin.

With the win, the Kernels maintain their lead of four games over Quad Cities for the MWL West wild-card spot. The River Bandits beat Burlington, 11-4.

Tickets for the Kernels first round playoff game on Wednesday, September 3 at 6:30 pm are on sale now in the Kernels Ticket Office and on-line at . Playoff ticket prices are the same as 2008 regular season tickets. Ticket Office Hours are 10 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, and 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday.
