Karl Leads US Team

August 27, 2002 - United Indoor Football Association (UIF)
Ohio Valley Greyhounds News Release

Boise, Idaho (August 27, 2002) – On Thurday, Head Coach George Karl will lead the 2002 USA Basketball World Championship Team into the FIBA World Basketball Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. Like seven current NBA coaches that have served on a USA Basketball coaching staff before him, Karl cut his teeth in the Continental Basketball Association.

Where Karl, who's .727 (176-66) winning percentage is tops in CBA history, will be leading a group of the NBA's finest into competition, CBA coaches of the past won two gold medals and two silvers with selections of the CBA's best.

In 1993 Head Coach Mike Thiabult (Current assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks) along with his assistant Flip Saunders (Current head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves) led a group of CBA All-Stars to gold in the Tournament of Americas. Thiabult returned in 1995 to lead the USA to a silver medal at the Pan American Games, narrowly missing the gold in a 90-86 loss to host Argentina.

For the 1997 Tournament of the Americas, a trio of CBA greats in Head Coach Mo McHone (Current assistant with the Los Angeles Clippers) and his assistants Eric Musselman (Recently named head coach of the Golden State Warriors) and Mark Hughes (Recently named assistant with the Orlando Magic) led a CBA comprised squad to gold in Uruguay.

McHone was back at the helm in 1999 to claim silver at the 13th Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada this time assisted by Dan Panaggio (Current assistant with the Portland Trail Blazers) and Keith Smart (Current assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers).
