Kannapolis Wins Series against WV in Rain-Shortened Game

CHARLESTON, WV - Despite a three-error day in just six innings, Kannapolis used the long ball to slide by the West Virginia Power, 2-1, Monday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park in a six-inning, rain-shortened game to conclude their eight-game road trip.
The Intimidators (32-17) got off to a sloppy start in the first inning on defense, as Calvin Mitchell reached on a fielding error from shortstop Laz Rivera, allowing Oneil Cruz to scurry to third after reaching on a leadoff single.
Next up, Deon Stafford Jr. smacked a grounder over to Luis Curbelo at third base that Curbelo could not handle, scoring Cruz for West Virginia's first and only run off LHP John Parke (W, 5-2).
In the third, Luis Gonzalez connected on his team-leading eighth homer of the season to right field to tie the game, good enough for his second home run in the last three games.
One in inning later in the fourth, the Intimidators showed off more power at the plate against West Virginia, as Anthony Villa hit his third homer of the season to right-center to give the I's a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Power (25-22) had their best opportunity to score the tying run, using two singles and walk to load the bases for the top of the lineup. With the tying run just 90 feet away, Parke got Brett Pope to fly out to center field to end the inning, adding on a couple strikeouts in the inning as well.
Parke finished the rain-shortened game throwing all five innings, striking out four batters and scattering six hits on 91 pitches. With his homer in the second inning, Gonzalez extended his hit-streak to 13 games.
Kannapolis will host the Delmarva Shorebirds for a three-game home slate starting Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m.
