Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

The Delmarva Shorebirds lost to the Kannapolis Intimidators 6-5 at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis, N.C. on Wednesday. The loss moves the club to 42-23 in the second half and 74-61 overall.

Kannapolis took a 2-0 edge in the third inning, on Shorebirds starter Ben Knapp, using three hits and two sacrifices. The two runs were the only two that Knapp allowed in his six and one-third, giving up six hits with five strikeouts. Before Delmarva rallied, two key players would leave due to injury. BJ Littleton, on a throw to the plate in the third, left after re-aggravating an injury to his left arm that he suffered in early July. Tripper Johnson turned his right ankle on first base in the fourth after collecting a hit.

The 'Birds rallied in the sixth, with four runs on four hits, on a bases clearing triple from Bryan Bass and a RBI single from Kyle Martin. It appeared the Intimidators got out of the inning on the ball hit by Bass as left-fielder Derek Wigginton made a leaping grab against the wall. Homeplate umpire Jason Klein ruled Wigginton trapped the ball allowing the runners to score. Kannapolis manager John Orton, after kicking dirt on the umpire and homeplate, was eventually ejected. In the eighth Delmarva added one more, to go ahead 5-2, on another triple from Bass.

Jayme Sperring got the call to end the game, but Kannapolis rallied for four to win the contest. Delmarva committed two errors, one on Mark Gibbs and one on Gary Cates, in the big inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Mike Morse lined a ball by left-fielder Richard Hackett for a bases clearing triple to tie the game. Jeremy Reed then flew out to Manley in center, scoring Morse, to end it.

Leading the way offensively was Bass and Martin with two hits each. The two teams finish the set on Thursday at 7 PM with John Maine taking the mound. You can hear all the action at www.theshorebirds.com.
