Johnson's Third Walk-Off Sends Senators to 4-3 Win

August 9, 2018 - Eastern League (EL) - Harrisburg Senators News Release

The Harrisburg Senators won a walk-off over the Hartford Yard Goats 4-3 Thursday night at FNB Field. After Hartford tied the game in the top of the ninth, Daniel Johnson knocked the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the frame to send the Senators to their twelfth walk-off win of the season.

Hartford scored a pair of runs in the first against Senators starting pitcher Cesar Vargas when Brian Mundell hit a two-RBI double.

Those were the only two runs that Vargas allowed along with eight hits while striking out seven across six innings.

"(Vargas) just had a rough first inning. He continued to make pitches," Senators manager Matt LeCroy said. "Every time out it seems like he gets stronger as the game goes. He did a nice job."

Hartford remained ahead 2-0 until the seventh. With Hartford starter Evan Grills out of the game after throwing six shutout innings, Jake Noll singled off reliever Parker French to start the frame. The next batter, Alec Keller, doubled into center field to score Noll. One batter later, pinch-hitter Austin Davidson reached on an infield single and the third baseman Ryan Metzler's throw went past first baseman Brian Mundell, which allowed Keller to score and Davidson to get to second. After Hunter Jones was hit by a pitch, Carter Kieboom drove in the go-ahead run with a run-scoring groundout to third.

With the Senators ahead 3-2 in the top of the ninth, a runner at third and the Yard Goats down to their final strike, pinch-hitter Roberto Ramos singled to right off Dakota Bacus to score the tying run.

In the bottom of the ninth, Drew Ward led-off with a pinch-hit single against reliever Logan Cozart. Following an infield single by Hunter Jones to put runners at first and second, Daniel Johnson lined an RBI single to right-center to give the Senators the 4-3 walk-off win.

"The boys found a way," LeCroy said. "They grinded and put the ball in play which forced (Hartford) to make plays."

Bacus (2-1) picked up the win while Cozart (7-4) suffered the loss. Jones, Keiboom, Keller and Johnson all finished with a pair of hits to pace the Senators.

"Really proud of what the boys did in the ninth inning and I'm really happy for everybody. We're still learning everyday and grinding it out and hopefully we can stay in (the playoff race)

The Senators continue the homestand with a three-game series against the Trenton Thunder beginning Friday night. Jaron Long starts for the Senators opposite Trenton starter Brian Keller. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at FNB Field. The game can be heard on CBS Sports Harrisburg 96.5 & 95.3 FM and 1400 AM or at www.cbssportsharrisburg.com beginning at 6:45 p.m.
