Johnson Tosses Five Strong Innings in Loss
MOOSIC, Penn. - With a pair of late-inning runs, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders topped the Pawtucket Red Sox, 3-1, on Saturday night at PNC Field in the middle meeting of the three-game series.
The PawSox (54-58) staked themselves to a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the RailRiders (71-41) scored a run in each of the fifth, sixth and seven innings to hand Pawtucket its seventh consecutive loss.
PawSox starter Brian Johnson, in his return from the disabled list and left shoulder inflammation, spun five innings of one-run ball in which he scattered four hits over 60 pitches. Reliever Chandler Shepherd (L, 0-4) allowed a pair of runs on four hits in 1.2 innings.
RailRiders starter Domingo Germán (W, 4-1) logged six stout innings and only yielded one run while piling up five strikeouts and only ceding three hits. The right-hander retired the final 11 batters he faced. German and relievers J.P. Feyereisen and Giovanni Gallegos (S, 4) combined to limit the PawSox to merely four hits.
Pawtucket started the scoring in the top of the second when second baseman Heiker Meneses poked a broken-bat single into right field to score designated hitter Bryce Brentz and lift the PawSox to a 1-0 lead.
The RailRiders tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the fifth when right fielder Billy McKinney delivered a solo home run to right field.
In the bottom of the sixth, second baseman Donovan Solano supplied an RBI single to right field to score Aaron Hicks.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added to its advantage, 3-1, in the bottom of the seventh when Hicks' RBI triple plated shortstop Jonathan Diaz.
