Birmingham Barons News Release
Birmingham, AL - The Barons snapped their two-game losing streak to the Huntsville Stars Monday behind a stellar pitching performance by starter Erik Johnson and timely hitting by Andy Wilkins and Dan Black in front of 3,445 fans at Regions Field.
The Barons loaded the bases in the 2nd but were only able to plate one run on an RBI groundout by catcher Miguel Gonzalez.
They would maintain their 1-0 lead until the 7th when Mike Earley provided an insurance run with a sacrifice fly, scoring Dan Black from third base. The Barons would tack on another run in the 8th on an RBI base hit by Wilkins. Wilkins finished 2-for-3 on the day with a run scored and an RBI.
The three runs would prove to be more than enough for starter Erik Johnson (2-0, 1.07) who scattered three hits and struck out a season-high 10 over 7.0 shutout innings. Kevin Vance retired the final six outs of the game, escaping a bases loaded jamp in the ninth for his first save of the season. The 10 strikeouts were the most by a Barons pitcher since Andre Rienzo struck out 10 Stars on July 2nd , 2012.
With the win the Barons improved to 10-8 and 6-2 at Regions Field while Huntsville fell to 8-10 on the season.
The Barons will look to even the series tomorrow night as LHP Scott Snodgress (2-1, 4.24) takes the hill against RHP Andy Moye (1-0, 4.61). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CDT.
