Jino And The Gang Stifle Sharks Offense As Magic Number Drops To Eight

September 8, 2011 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution received a strong pitching effort from Jino Gonzalez and four relievers, earning a 5-2 win over the Camden Riversharks at Campbell's Field on Thursday evening. The Revs now lead the Freedom Division's second half standings by 4.0 games and have a magic number of eight to clinch. York will go for a series win with the rubber match on Friday night.

Gonzalez (1-1) earned his first win with the Revs, allowing just four hits and two runs (one earned) in five innings. Shaun Garceau, Dumas Garcia, Sean Stidfole, and R.J. Rodriguez (sixth save) each tossed scoreless innings in relief.

Camden scored a first inning run when Ruddy Yan led off with a bloop double, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a sac fly by Noah Hall.

The Revs answered right back an inning later, as Bryant Nelson lashed an RBI single to left, and Scott Grimes drew a bases loaded walk giving the Revs a 2-1 lead. The York offense failed to extend that advantage, however, leaving the bases loaded in the second and third, and bouncing into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded and one out in the fourth.

Camden tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Willis Otanez cracked a one-out double to left-center, and scored on an error when Nelson's throw on an infield single by Danny Richar bounced away at first base.

The Revs took the lead right back in the fifth, and held the lead for good. After Nelson's apparent two-run homerun down the left field line was overruled a foul ball, Nelson stepped back in and singled to center, and Vince Harrison drove in the go-ahead run on a bad hop single to left.

The Revs mounted a two-out rally in the seventh to increase their lead, as Salvador Paniagua ripped an RBI single to right, and Harrison scored on a wild pitch.

Sharks starter Carlos Vasquez (10-5) suffered the loss, charged with three runs on eight hits and five walks in his five innings of work. He also hit two batters but worked out of trouble throughout the game to keep the score tight, as only three of his fifteen baserunners crossed the plate. Vasquez is now 0-3 against York for the season.

The Revs pounded out 12 hits one night after being held to just three hits. Harrison went 3-for-4. Nelson was 2-for-3 and drew a pair of walks, reaching base four out of five times. Chris Walker and Ramon Castro also had two-hit games.

Notes: The Revs have clinched their winningest regular season in club history. York has now won 65 of their 113 games this season; it far surpasses their previous quickest mark to 65 victories (130 games in 2010). The Revs are now 13-4 against Camden for the season. York's Corey Thurman (11-3, 3.36) will face Camden's Eddy Camacho (6-6, 5.22) in the rubber game of the series on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350 and Shoutcast.com (WPDC) beginning at 6:30 with Darrell Henry on the call.
