Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
The Salem-Keizer bats heated up in the series finale against Hillsboro, snapping a five-game losing streak in a 10-7 decision. Ronnie Jebavy went 3-for-4 on the night, including two home runs and four RBIs.
After Hops starter Carlos Hernandez (4-2, 2.21) had baffled the Volcanoes all season long, Salem-Keizer tarnished Hernandez's 1.53 ERA.
The Hops jumped out to a 3-0 lead courtesy of a Trevor Mitsui homerun off of starter Nate Santiago in the first inning. Salem-Keizer pulled within one run in the bottom of the second inning when Jebavy smashed an RBI triple, scoring Junior Amion.
Right-hander Eric Sim (1-1, 2.81 ERA) relieved starter Nate Santiago in the fourth, after Santiago allowed a run from Luis Veras, who scored on a line-drive double from Nate Irving and extending the Hops advantage to 4-3.
Jebavy's bat was just heating up, however, as he blasted a two-run homer to score Mark Nelson, who drew a walk to lead off the fourth inning, tying the game at four apiece. The very next inning, Chris Shaw pounded a go-ahead home run out of the park, giving Salem-Keizer a 5-4 advantage. Jose Vizcaino then singled and advanced to second on an error and scored off a sharp single from Julio Pena, chasing Hernandez from the mound as the Volcanoes took a 6-4 advantage.
The Hops refused to go away easily, as they continued to chip away at the deficit late in the game. Mitsui blasted his sixth homerun in five days in the top of the eight inning off of reliever Ryan Halstead.
Halstead ran into a jam when pinch-hitter Galli Cribbs Jr. doubled to score Veras, putting the Hops within one run. With the tying run on third, Halstead walked Joey Armstrong, who then scampered to second. Sergio Alcantara blasted a hit to centerfield that looked destined to tie the game, but Jebavy made a tumbling behind-the-head catch to escape the top of the eight.
Jebavy's night wasn't over, though, as he smashed his second home run of the night out of the park and tacked on a Salem-Keizer insurance run. John Riley then hit a two-out line drive double to right field, scoring pinch-runner Christian Lichtenthaler and Vizcaino.
Player of the Game: Ronnie Jebavy had nothing short of a heroic outing, going 3-4 from the plate, which included two home runs and four RBI's. This marked the first time the Volcanoes had a man hit multiple home runs in one game this season. He shined on defense as well, making multiple acrobatic catches to escape jams and prevent tying runs.
Up Next: Salem-Keizer begins their series against Eugene tomorrow night at home and looks to carry momentum from tonight's win into the series. Grant Watson will take the mound for the Volcanoes, making his first start in a Salem-Keizer uniform.
