Jackals Sweep Aside Cardinals, 6-1

August 31, 2020 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release

Week 6 in the All-American Baseball Challenge concluded with the second matchup between the New Jersey Jackals and Skylands Cardinals. The Jackals entered the game looking for their second consecutive win and their first series sweep since opening weekend, when they defeated the New York Brave in two games.

Jackals pitcher Hayden Schenefield was fantastic in his first start of the season, retiring the first six Cardinals hitters, and scattering just two hits through five innings of work. Catcher John Russo started the scoring for the home side, singling in the second and racing around to score on a Ryan Rivera RBI single, giving the Jackals a 1-0 lead.

In the 4th, it would be the bottom portion of the lineup that extended the lead. First baseman and sixth hitter Tommy McCarthy led off with a single, raced to third on a fly-ball that was dropped by Skylands right fielder Yuniel Cabrera, and scored on a wild pitch. 2B Raul Shah, who reached on that error by Cabrera, scored on an error by A.J. Wright who allowed the ball to kick into the outfield while trying to record the final out of the inning.

The 3-0 lead for New Jersey would last into the 8th inning, when Skylands attempted a comeback. Shortstop Edison Cabrera laced a double to the wall, followed by an RBI single from CF Jose Garcia, his second RBI base hit in the series. Jackals reliever Sean Keselica worked out of further trouble, however, leaving the score at 3-1.

Now leading by only two, the Jackals socially distanced themselves from their opponents in the bottom of the 8th, utilizing a walk to Rivera, a sac-bunt from right fielder Demetrius Moorer, a single by DH Jason Agresti and one more error by the Cardinals middle infield to score 3 more insurance runs. The Cardinals loaded the bases in the ninth, but Jackals reliever Brendan Brosher slammed the door, securing the 6-1 victory, the 9th on the season for New Jersey.

The Jackals will return to play this Thursday against the Jersey Wise Guys for "Thirsty Thursday" at 7:05, the opener of a four game series. Saturday night will be the only fireworks night of the season, beginning at 6:05 and Sunday's regular season finale will be the final Sunday game, with first pitch at 2:05.

You can catch all the Jackals action on the Jackals Radio Network and Twitch with the Jackals Den Pregame Show beginning 15 minutes before first pitch.
