Charlottetown Islanders News Release

Let the Gold Rush officially begin.

The march to the President's Cup officially commences for the Charlottetown Islanders today when they meet the Acadie-Bathurst Titan in the Maritimes Division Final in Shawinigan, Quebec at 5:00pm.

The two teams faced off once this season prior to the tighter COVID-19 restrictions across the Maritimes, with the Islanders pulling off an exciting 4-2 victory in Bathurst on Halloween night. Thomas Casey scored the game winner with 1:26 remaining in the game while Lukas Cormier kicked in a goal and an assist in the victory.

The league-leading Islanders will continue to look for offensive leadership from the team's top line. Cédric Desruisseaux, Thomas Casey, and Brett Budgell were offensive juggernauts this season finishing in the top 3 in league scoring. They were followed up in fourth by Lukas Cormier, who paced all defenders in scoring this season.

In goal, Colten Ellis will begin his final playoff run in search of his first championship. He was arguably the best goalie in the QMJHL this season, leading the league in almost all statistical goaltender categories this season while also setting league records in career Shutouts and Goals Against Average.

Despite his strength between the pipes, anything can happen once the puck drops and Charlottetown has added some insurance accordingly. The team has called up Paolo Marabella to serve as the third goaltender in the event of an injury. Marabella was the team's 6th round pick in the 2020 QMJHL Draft; he was selected out of the Lac-St-Louis Lions program that has produced a number of quality netminders including Halifax's Brady James and Team Canada World Junior gold medallist Devon Levi.

Like Charlottetown, Acadie-Bathurst will be looking to book their first trip to the President's Cup semi-final since 2017-2018 in this best-of-five series. The Titan finished second in the Maritimes Division after a strong showing amongst their New Brunswick counterparts in the second half of the season. They booked their berth in the Maritimes Division Final after defeating the Moncton Wildcats in double-overtime in their final game of their round robin series with the Wildcats and Saint John Sea Dogs.

The team has been propelled offensively by NHL Draft prospect Riley Kidney. The 11th overall pick of the Titan in the 2019 QMJHL Draft, Kidney has been extremely impressive through six round robin games, picking up ten assists and twelve points overall to lead the playoffs in scoring.

You can catch the exciting first game of the playoffs on Ocean 100 with George Matthews and Cory Arsenault, or watch along on Eastlink Community TV.
