Islanders Defeat Sags in Final Leg of Quebec Road Trip

October 6, 2018 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release

It took some extra time, but the Charlottetown Islanders finally snagged a much-needed victory in Quebec, defeating the Chicoutimi Sagueneens by a score of 3-2 in the shootout.

Much like last night in Baie-Comeau, Charlottetown would open the game buzzing, testing Sagueneens starting netminder Alexis Shank early. It would ultimately pay off 2:25 in to the game. Liam Peyton would find a loose puck in front of Shank and put it in the net, giving the Islanders an early 1-0 lead.

The Sagueneens would battle back to even midway through the first. Vladislav Kotkov would find the back of the net near the end of a powerplay, beating Matthew Welsh to bring the score to 1-1.

The score would stay that way until late in the first. Keith Getson would gather the puck in the Sagueneens slot and roof a backhander past Shank. For Getson, that's his third goal of the season and second in as many games.

Mathieu Desgagnes would even the score back up just minutes later, finding the puck in a mad scramble in front of Welsh and sneaking it past the fourth year netminder to bring the score to 2-2.

Somehow, the score would stay that way for 40 more minutes. Chicoutimi and Charlottetown would trade opportunities throughout the game, but neither team could beat the men between the pipes.

Ultimately, another five minutes of overtime would solve nothing. As we headed to the shootout, head coach Jim Hulton would put his faith in rookie defenseman Lukas Cormier. Cormier, who made headlines over the summer with a highlight-reel move at a Team Canada World Under-17 tryout, would make no mistake, scoring the only goal in the shootout and giving the Islanders their first win in four games.

The Islanders return home to play the Halifax Mooseheads on Thursday, October 11th, in our next Student Night game. Tickets are available as always at the Eastlink Centre box office, by phone at 902-629-6625, or online at https://boxoffice.eastlinkcentrepei.com!
