Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs fell 5-4 to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Thursday at PNC Field. The 11-inning contest was the second loss in extras for Lehigh Valley, and the second walk-off loss in the last three games as the RailRiders swept the three-game series.
With Jake Waguespack (0-4) on the mound for Lehigh Valley in the 11th, Zack Zehner advanced to third on a groundout and scored the game-winning run on a bunt from Tyler Wade.
Tom Eshelman recorded his best start of 2018 for Lehigh Valley, logging five innings and only allowing two runs. From the bullpen, Hoby Milner and Victor Arrono, on a Good Shepherd rehab assignment for the Phillies, each contributed a scoreless inning. The RailRiders scored their first four runs on home runs, a two-run shot from LJ Mazilli in the fifth, and a game-tying two-run homer from Mike Ford off of Austin Davis in the eighth.
The Pigs attacked starter Josh Rogers early. After Dean Anna opened the game with a triple to center field, Danny Ortiz grounded out to score Anna. Lehigh Valley brought across two more runs quickly thanks to a second-inning RBI single from Alexi Amarista and a solo home run from Joey Meneses in the fourth. From there, Rogers coasted to the eighth inning until the Pigs struck again, stringing together a hit-by-pitch and a pair of singles to bring home a fourth run.
JP Feyereisen and Brady Lail (4-1) combined to blank the Pigs into the extra frames and make the walk-off possible for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Meneses continued his hot streak for the IronPigs at the plate, going 2-for-4 with his home run and a double, while Ortiz aided the cause going 1-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in.
The RailRiders now lead the 2018 Iron Rail Rivalry 5-4 with the home team winning eight of nine contests.
The Pigs continue their road trip Friday when they visit the Syracuse Chiefs for the first of a three-game series. Ben Lively will be making his second start for Lehigh Valley with first pitch coming at 6:35 p.m.
