Inland Empire Falls Below .500 For The First Time In 2013

April 19, 2013 - California League (CalL1)
Inland Empire 66ers News Release

San Bernardino, CA - After enjoying two weeks at or above .500 the Inland Empire 66ers (7-8) fell below all even after dropping a 5-1 series opener to the league leading San Jose Giants (11-4). Giants reliever Austin Fleet pitched four innings without allowing a base runner to highlight the contest.

The Giants pounced on the 66ers right from the game's opening batter. Lead off man Sawn Payne smacked a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI groundout to give the Giants a lead they would not relinquish. 66ers starter Danny Reynolds was pulled abruptly from the game in the 2nd inning, no reason has yet been given why, but Reynolds had gone six innings in each of his first two outings.

Inland Empire was facing a season low in hits and runs until they got on the board in the 7th inning on a swinging strike three by Ryan Jones where the pitch ended up in the dirt, Jones ended up reaching base safely, and Alex Yarbrough ended up scoring from third. The 66ers had run scoring opportunities in the 8th and 9th innings with lead off singles, but double plays killed both potential rallies in what would be a losing night for Inland Empire.

The 66ers will try to return their record back to .500 on Friday in a 7:05 PM pitchers showdown between the two teams' top performing pitchers, Mark Sappington of Inland Empire and Ty Blach of San Jose. It will also be a 50 cent Friday presented by Toyota and Scion of Redlands, and that is just the start of the promotional fun. It will also be Star Wars night at the ballpark, thundersticks will be presented pre-game by San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, and a fireworks extravaganza will follow the game.
