Louisiana IceGators News Release

The Louisiana IceGator organization announced today the re-signing of forward Shawn McNeil for the 2011-2012 season. The 33 year old is originally from Pembroke, Ontario. McNeil played major junior hockey for the Kamloops Blazers and Red Deer Rebels of the WHL (Western Hockey League). He was drafted by the Washington Capitals (3rd round, 78th overall) in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.

"This is a big signing for us," head Coach Kevin Kaminski said. "Shawn gives us leadership, accountability, scoring and is an offensive threat. Shawn is a solid defensive player who is great on face-offs, knowing when to make plays in his own zone or just getting the puck out. He brings so many little tangibles to the game. He leads by example on and off the ice. He has a calming effect on everyone with a great knowledge of the game and will be a big part of the special teams. We look for a big year from Shawn and are very excited to have him back home in the dome."

In 1999, he had brief stints with Cleveland Lumberjacks of the International Hockey League and The Canadian National Team before signing with the IceGators. McNeil would play four seasons for the IceGators, from 1999-2003, before leaving to play for seven seasons in Germany. In 2010, Shawn would make his comeback with the Gators. As of today, he has played a total of 322 games for the IceGators, accumulating 155 goals and 197 assists for a total of 352 points, with 276 penalty minutes (PIM).

"I am excited about coming back for another season with the IceGator organization," forward Shawn McNeil said. "I have great faith in our owner Chuck Anselmo, General Manager Louis Dumont and Coach Kaminski to continue rebuilding the organization in a positive direction. A lot of work has been put into the team this summer from the office staff and I am more than happy to help contribute what I can on the ice, as well as in the community for the coming season. Not only that, I am excited to be able to have my family with me at the hockey games, especially my son Aidan, as I don't know how many more years I have left of competitive hockey after this season."

Louisiana IceGators opening night is scheduled for Friday, November 11th at 7:05 p.m. The IceGators will host the Augusta RiverHawks at the Cajundome celebrating "Military Appreciation Night". Great seats are still available for Season Tickets! For more information please contact the IceGators office at 337-704-4423.
