Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs were back on home ice Saturday night as the North Bay Battalion were in town to conclude this season series. Coming into tonights' game, the season series was lead by the 'Dogs, 3 games to 2. The 'Dogs, who were back in action following a tough close game in Mississauga last night, were banking on home ice to be an advantage an pull ahead against a team they're were tied with at 63 points on the season. After playing consecutive games at home Thursday, and in Mississauga last night, Stevie Dhillon was given the night off, Colton Incze got the start in net.

The Battalion jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period. As the first wore on, the 'Dogs continued to press hard, getting many chances, but they weren't able to beat the goaltender (or the goal post). In the final minute of the period, Akil Thomas did what he does best, and sniped one past Christian Propp to cut the Battalion lead in half! Thomas' 19th of the season was assisted by Sam Miletic and Kirill Maksimov.

Nearing the midway point of the second period, the game began to get physical, which was expected between two rivals, which created an exciting playoff-like atmosphere in the Meridian Centre. The fans got even more excited when Sam Miletic picked up a rebound from a shot by Philip Tomasino, and tied the game up at 2, scoring five-hole on Propp. Tomasino and Akil Thomas were credited with the assists. Later in the period, after a tussle after a whistle, the game went to 4 on 4. Elijah Roberts jumped up in the rush, despite being down a man and his shot on goal slid between Propps' legs and we took a 3-2 lead! Roberts' goal was assisted by Ben Jones and Justin MacPherson.

The third period continued to be a spirited affair, with both sides getting great scoring chances. With under two minutes remaining in the game, Ben Jones capitalized on an empty North Bay net and scored his 20th goal of the season! Johnny Schaefer picked up the assist on Jonesy's goal.

The 4-2 score held, and the IceDogs defeated the Battalion in the most important game of their season to date!
