IceDogs Battle Hard against High-Flying Petes, Coming Home with a Point

November 14, 2019 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) - Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs closed out their early November 4-game road trip tonight in Peterborough against the high scoring Petes. Deeper into their developmental cycle, the Petes will prove to be a formidable test for the rebuilding IceDogs.

Niagara will receive reinforcements on the back-end with the return of first year player Isaac Enright from the World U17 Hockey Challenge.

The Petes opened the scoring early in the first period, but two minutes later, a point shot from Enright was redirected twice by Thomas and Lodnia. Although the goal was initially called off for being offside, but a review proved otherwise and the IceDogs drew even! On an IceDogs power play, midway through the first period, Niagara took the 2-1 lead after Oliver Castleman potted home a feed from Captain Thomas in the slot. This was Castleman's seventh goal of the season, and first since October 25th.

The Petes equalized the score at 2 before the end of the period, but that period is what a rebuilding team can consider a good road period. With 1/2 successful penalty kills, a successful power play opportunity, two goals scored, and 12 face off wins, the young 'Dogs were in a good position after one.

Rookie goaltender Tucker Tynan made several big saves in the second period to maintain the tied score. Tynan, who leads the league in shots faced, has been a shining point to the IceDogs rebuilding season this year. AJ Cook, another first-year defenceman, made a series of big plays in the second period to cause havoc against the Petes in his own zone. First, he prevented a scoring opportunity, and then he got physical to keep the Petes to the perimeter in the zone, without crossing the line to warrant a penalty. Just over halfway through the middle frame, Jake Uberti found the back of the net with his fourth of the season! Uberti tapped in a bouncing puck to give the IceDogs a 3-2, with the lone assist going to Dakota Betts, who got his second point of the night.

The Petes tied the game towards the end of the period, carrying a 3-3 score into the final period of regulation.

The IceDogs went to work early in the third, especially after earning a power play. With the man advantage, the IceDogs capitalized, to have taken advantage of half of their power plays thus far in the game. Phil Tomasino got on the board for the first time in six games, and he made it count! Tomasino's snipe gave Niagara the 4-3 lead, and, with the assist, Adrien Beraldo got his first point as an IceDog and of the season!

Under two minutes after Tomasino gave the 'Dogs the lead, Ivan Lodnia scored his second of the game, redirecting a shot from rookie defender Giancarlo Chanton, to give Niagara consecutive 5-goal games! With the secondary assist, Uberti picked up his second point of the night! The Petes scored two quick goals in the final minutes of the period to tie the game at 5.

The IceDogs were guaranteed to go home with at least one point as the game went to overtime. The Petes only needed 30 seconds with the extra man to take this game 6-5.

Leaving Peterborough with a point, this game proved to the rebuilding IceDogs they can compete with even the best of teams in their conference, the OHL, and the CHL, as the Petes rank 10th in Canada.
