Ice Breakers Avoid Weekend Sweep with 6-3 Win

March 24, 2019 - Federal Hockey League (FHL) - Port Huron Prowlers News Release

(Port Huron, MI) The Ice Breakers take a rare road victory with them back to Ohio after dropping back-to-back home games, and they took control right from the start.

Mentor netted two goals in the first 90 seconds of the game, with the first three goals scored by defensemen. Joe Swenson broke the Ice with a deflected puck from a Brody Duncan shot to make it 1-0. Shortly after Tommy Mahoney would find twine and make it 2-0 less than a minute and half into the game.

Joe Ftoma got in on the blue line offense scoring a goal to make it 3-0 before Matt Robertson finally got the Prowlers on the board to make it 3-1, but a late goal given up by the Prowlers to Steven Prowlers make it a 4-1 game going into the intermission.

Six minutes into the middle frame Patrick Porkka would start the scoring again for Mentor making it 5-1 and the Prowlers couldn't find the piece to solve the puzzle of Derek Moser who made 16 of his 39 saves in the 2nd period. Patrick Tondl would be the only one to score for the Prowlers in the 2nd but kept the game within reach 5-2 going into the 3rd.

Mark Essery would put any hopes of a comeback into serious doubt as he netted his first of the night to go along with 3 assists making it a 6-2 game. Matt Robertson would score to make it 6-3 but with only 15 seconds left to go, it was too little too late.

Port Huron had to kill 3 separate major penalties 2 of which resulted in game misconducts in the third period from Joe Pace Jr. and Justin Portillo.

The Ice Breakers will be on the road for the first two of a three game weekend series with Elmira. Port Huron will host Carolina for the first two of their final three home games this weekend capping it off when they host Watertown for the final regular season game at McMorran this year.
