Houston Dynamo to Host CD Guastatoya February 26 in CONCACAF Champions League Round of 16

December 19, 2018 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - Houston Dynamo FC News Release

HOUSTON - The Houston Dynamo will open their 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League campaign by visiting CD Guastatoya for the first leg of their Round of 16 matchup on Feb. 19 at 9 p.m. CST and will host the second leg on Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. CST at BBVA Compass Stadium, Concacaf announced today.

Tickets for the match at BBVA Compass Stadium on Feb. 26 will be available starting at $24 on Thursday at 10 a.m. CST. Tickets may be purchased online at HoustonDynamo.com, by phone at 713-276-4625 or at the BBVA Compass Stadium box office.

The Concacaf Champions League is the region's premier club championship. The 2019 tournament will be the 11th edition of the competition and will feature representatives from nine Concacaf Member Associations. Sixteen clubs from the United States, Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic will begin play in February. The winner of the Houston-Guastatoya series would advance to play the winner of Costa Rican superclub Deportivo Saprissa and Mexican powerhouse Tigres UANL in the quarterfinal.

This will be the first time that Houston is matched with a team from Guatemala in the Champions League and the club's second across all international competitions. The only previous meeting between the Dynamo and a club from Guatemala came in 2008 when Houston defeated CSD Municipal 3-1 on aggregate in the quarterfinals of the 2008 CONCACAF Champions' Cup, the predecessor to the Champions League.

Guastatoya will host Houston at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores in Guatamala City on Feb. 19. On Feb. 26, BBVA Compass Stadium will host its first Champions League match since Sept. 2013 when Houston defeated W Connection F.C. (TT) 2-0 in the group stage. The winner of the two-leg series will be determined based on total number of goals scored across both matches, with goals scored away from home serving as a tiebreaker.

Guastatoya became the eighth different Guatemalan team to play in the tournament after they defeated Antigua GFC in Guatemala's two-leg Champions League playoff. The club defeated Comunicaciones F.C. last Saturday 3-2 on aggregate to repeat as Liga Nacional de Fútbol de Guatemala champions.

The Dynamo qualified for the Champions League by winning the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Houston defeated the Philadelphia Union 3-0 on Sept. 26 at BBVA Compass Stadium to claim the Open Cup title for the first time in club history.

This will be Houston's seventh appearance in an international competition and the club's first since the 2012-13 Champions League. Houston's best finish in an international competition was a semifinal appearance in the 2008 Concacaf Champions Cup.
