Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, KY - The Hot Rods, down 5-0, scored ten runs between the second and fifth innings to defeat the South Bend Silver Hawks (21-28, 55-63), 10-5, on Sunday afternoon. The victory clinches the series for the Hot Rods (26-23, 66-52), improving their record to a league-best 42-17 at home in 2011.

South Bend put the Hot Rods and Jason McEachern in an early hole by scoring five runs over the first two innings. Yazy Arbelo put the Silver Hawks on top with a two-out two-run homer in the first inning, his league-best 26th of the year. An inning later South Bend tacked on three more on run-scoring hits from Ramon Castillo, Niko Gallego, and David Narodowski.

The Hot Rods began their comeback in the bottom of the inning against J.R. Bradley, courtesy of Todd Glaesmann. With one out and men at the corners, Glaesmann drove home Robby Price with a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 5-1.

The fourth inning saw the Hot Rods revert to the long ball to tack on two more runs. With one out, Derek Dietrich and Phil Wunderlich went back-to-back for their 17th and 16th, respectively. The second set of back-to-back homers this year made it a 5-3 game.

After McEachern stranded two men in the top of the fourth, the Hot Rods took the lead in the bottom of the frame. With one out and men at first and second, Cody Rogers ripped a triple into the right field corner to tie the game at 5-5. Two batters later, Wunderlich's two-out single to center plated Rogers to push the Hot Rods ahead 6-5.

Both starters lasted just four innings for their respective teams. McEachern allowed five runs on five hits, but held South Bend scoreless in his final two innings of work. Bradley allowed six runs on eight hits, five for extra bases.

In the fifth, the Hot Rods busted the game open with a four-run frame. They loaded the bases up with one out, allowing Kiermaier to drive home the first run with a force out at second base. Rogers then followed with another triple, scoring two more runs to push the margin to 9-5. A two-out RBI single from Dietrich brought Rogers home to cap the scoring at 10-5.

The Hot Rods offense saw plenty of production from the top three guys in the order. Rogers, Dietrich, and Wunderlich all went 3-5 on the day. Rogers had two triples, drove home four, and scored two more runs to bring his league-best total to 81. Dietrich and Wunderlich each drove home two runs, the latter now with 80 RBI on the season, third in the Midwest League.

Price had a special day as well, going 3-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs, and his 74th walk, most in the circuit. He reached base in his first four plate appearances, setting a new standard in Hot Rods history. Dating back to his final two at-bats (triple, single) on Friday night in Fort Wayne, Price reached base in ten straight plate appearances going 8-8 with two doubles, a triple, a home run, and two walks. That streak ended when he flied to left in the bottom of the eighth.

Omar Bencomo (W; 2-4) earned the win as the Hot Rods staff combined to throw seven shutout innings after South Bend's quick start. Bencomo had two scoreless followed by a pair of shutout innings from Jimmy Patterson and a scoreless ninth by Austin Hubbard.

The Hot Rods now host South Bend for the final time on Monday night at 6:35 PM. Monday is Feed Your Face Night Part Deux. For $12, all fans get a ticket to the game and unlimited hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn, and nachos through the seventh inning.
