Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - The Hooks sent eight to the plate and scored a pair of runs in the 10th inning Wednesday night, edging San Antonio, 6-5, at Whataburger Field.
Corpus Christi (23-16) has won five in a row, and now trails the Missions by 2.0 games in the Texas League South.
The Hooks established a 4-0 lead over the first four innings against lefty Jerry Keel. Doubles by Josh Rojas and Randy Cesar paved the way toward a pair in the first. Carmen Benedetti added an RBI single.
In the fourth, Cesar scored from first when Ryne Birk belted a triple to right-center. Nick Tanielu cashed in Birk with a single through the left side.
Framber Valdez shackled San Antonio through the first five frames, limiting the visitors to three singles.
The Missions (25-14) made it a 4-3 contest in the sixth with a three-run home run off the bat of Ty France.
Valdez, who retired the final four men he faced, struck out eight against one walk over a season-best seven innings.
Ralph Garza escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth but surrendered a Forrest Allday RBI base hit in the ninth which leveled the score.
The Missions plated their extra-inning runner in the 10th, putting Corpus Christi behind, 5-4.
In the home half, pinch-runner Myles Straw went from second to third on a wild pitch, and then scored when Cesar notched his fourth hit of the night, a single to center past the drawn-in infield.
With two away in the frame, Tanielu stroked a single into left-center to keep the line moving. Sidewinder Gerardo Reyes then plunked the next two hitters, sending the Hooks to their third last at-bat win of the year.
Corpus Christi shoots for the sweep Thursday night with lefty Ryan Hartman (2-1, 1.86) on the hill.
