Home Game Prep: Family Fun this Weekend with Tommy Hawk and Wiener Dog Races
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - The Chicago Steel start a season-long, seven-game homestand this weekend with a pair of home games featuring exciting promotions. Friday's game against the Des Moines Buccaneers is Olympic Night, and Chicago Blackhawks mascot Tommy Hawk will join the festivities. Saturday's contest against the Madison Capitols features the team's first annual Wiener Dog Races.
Advance tickets to all Steel games at Fox Valley Ice Arena start at just $10 and parking is always free.
On Friday, Tommy Hawk will bring his wacky antics back to Geneva, joining Steel mascot Rusty for a night of fun and entertainment on and off the ice. Tommy Hawk will participate in a variety of promotions throughout the evening, including matching up against fans in competitions of slingshot bowling and a game of "Challenge the Mascot."
Olympic Night not only celebrates the current winter games, but the Steel are proud to honor athletes from Special Olympics Chicago throughout the evening. Over 175 tickets were donated by the Steel to Special Olympics Chicago as part of the team's campaign last August to match any season ticket plan purchase with a free ticket for a Special Olympics athlete, coach or family member.
Fans may help raise funds for the organization by purchasing a special ticket to Friday's game from Special Olympics Chicago with a portion of the proceeds donated back to Special Olympics. For more information, visit sochicago.org.
Saturday features the team's first annual Wiener Dog Races, with the non-stop action extending to intermission. More than 15 dachshunds are currently registered to go for gold in the event which has become a popular United States Hockey League tradition. The field will be split into two preliminary heats in the first intermission, and the final will take place in the second intermission. The dogs will race from the goal line to center ice prior to the Zamboni cut. Race proceeds will benefit Rescue Warriors Corp., an Elgin-based nonprofit whose mission is to save abandoned animals from being euthanized. Prizes have been provided by WoofBeach, including a free grooming, free training evaluation and free sweatshirt to the first-place finisher. Saturday's game also features fun promotions like a hot dog eating contest and a human dog barking contest.
Steel games are carried live on Mixlr (free audio) and HockeyTV (iPPV). For more information, visit ChicagoSteelHockeyTeam.com/broadcast. For more information, or to purchase Steel tickets, call 855-51-STEEL, stop by the Box Office at Fox Valley Ice Arena or visit ChicagoSteelHockeyTeam.com.
