Northern Colorado Owlz News Release

Kevin Higgins holds the franchise record for the most hits in a single season. And now, he's back for more.

Here's what skip had to say ...

From Frank Gonzales:

For me, he's that infielder that has his job to lose with the Owlz. He had 200-plus at-bats with a .350 average. He's a high-energy guy. It looks like there's some leadership ability there. He's a good player. Obviously, a .350 batting average would warrant at least an opportunity to return and compete, as long as he's healthy.

And here's what the big-swinging Bay Stater had to say about himself ...

What made you want to come back? I love the Owlz organization. Great people running it. Last year, I felt like it was a bit bumpy, but we have a lot to prove coming out into the new stadium. The facilities are unbelievable this year. It was kind of a no-brainer.

What do you have to prove this season? Last year, I had a pretty good season. I just want to come out and be a leader for everybody. I feel like I can be a guy that other guys build off of, and having that first year under my belt, I can help guys transition. And then, I want to prove that I can play at the next level, which is affiliated ball.

What did you learn about yourself as a ballplayer last year? I learned that taking care of the body is huge. It's a lot of games in a short period. It's different playing every day than when you're in college, playing four games a week in a busy week. Just being able to play every day and keep your body ready for every day.

What do you like about the core group of guys coming back? We have eight coming back, and all of us had great years last year. And I mean seven healthy guys this year, so that's huge. We saw what Nick [Bottari] could do with the bat last year when he was healthy. [Dakota Popham] has got some juice, so that's good to see. I was a staple at short last year, so hopefully that's the plan again this year. On the mound, it looks like we got a really great group of pitchers. We got [Austin] Schneider leading the group after last year. C.J. [Grant-DeBose] is coming out of the 'pen again. So yea, I'm really looking forward to it.

Why are you ready and excited for another season in Northern Colorado? Oh, I'm fired up. It seems like we got a really great group of dudes. It's gonna be fun. Hopefully the fans come out and get to see us bring a lot of wins to Windsor.
