Hillsboro Hops Announce 2020 Field Staff

January 15, 2020 - Northwest League (NWL) - Hillsboro Hops News Release

Hillsboro, OR. - The Hillsboro Hops (@HillsboroHops) announced today that Javier Colina will return as the team's manager for the 2020 season. Colina is a familiar face in Hillsboro, managing the club to the Northwest League Championship in 2019. Colina was also the hitting instructor of the 2015 championship team. Colina will be joined by hitting coach Franklin Stubbs, pitching coach Mike Parrott, and fourth coach Mark Reed. The announcements were made Wednesday by the Hops' parent club, the Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks).

Javier Colina will be entering his seventh season with the Diamondbacks, and his third as manager, having led the Hops last season and the Rookie-level Arizona League D-backs in 2017. In 2018, he served as a coach for Arizona's Double-A affiliate in Jackson, Tennessee, and also has managerial experience in the Nicaraguan Winter League. Colina played 15 years of professional baseball (1998-2012), spending time in the Rockies, Cardinals, Reds and White Sox organizations, and topping out with parts of four seasons in Triple-A. A native of Venezuela, Colina was the MVP of the Venezuelan Winter League in 2005.

Franklin Stubbs is also making a return to Hillsboro as hitting instructor, having served in the same role with the Hops in 2017 and 2019. In 2018, he was the hitting coach with Arizona's Advanced-A Visalia affiliate in the California League. He now returns to the Hops, where he mentored Diamondback's 2nd overall prospect Kristian Robinson last season and top draft picks Pavin Smith, Drew Ellis and Daulton Varsho during their professional debut season in 2017. This will be Stubbs' 24th year as a professional coach. He played 10 seasons in the major leagues with the Dodgers (1984-89), Astros (1990), Brewers (1991-92) and Tigers (1995), and won a World Series ring with the 1988 Dodgers. That year, he went 5-for-17 (.294) with two doubles and two RBIs during the Dodgers' five-game series win over the Athletics.

Another familiar face in Hillsboro, Mike Parrott is returning as the pitching coach. Parrott formerly was the Hops pitching coach from 2016-18. After serving as the Kane County Cougars pitching coach last season, Parrott will be back in Hillsboro for his fourth season with the club. This will be Parrott's 31st year as a professional coach. He played 5 seasons in the major leagues with the Orioles (1977) and Seattle Mariners (1978-81). Parrott's career was highlight by his 1979 campaign when he went 14-12 with a 3.77 ERA including 13 complete games. At the time he set all-time Mariner records in wins, ERA, and innings pitched (229 1/3).

Former Diamondbacks bullpen catcher, Mark Reed is entering his 9th year with the organization as a coach, his first with the Hops. Reed played 9 seasons in the minor leagues for the Cubs (2004-10) and Diamondbacks (2011-12). Reed also served as the bullpen catcher for the 2013 and 2016 World Baseball Classics.

Ben Petrick, a lifelong Hillsboro resident, is the only person to be in a Hillsboro uniform every season of the club's existence. A second-round draft selection of the Colorado Rockies out of Glencoe High School in 1995, he spent parts of five seasons in the major leagues with the Rockies and Detroit Tigers.

"We are really excited about our 2020 coaching staff coming to Hillsboro to defend our 3rd Northwest League Championship in the last 6 years," said Hops President and General Manager K.L. Wombacher. "Led by manager Javier Colina, this is a very experienced staff that works hard and gets the most out of our young players."

Previous Hops managers are working their way up baseball's ladder, J.R. House, who managed the Hops in 2014 (and won the league title) is entering his second season as the Cincinnati Reds' major league third-base coach and catching instructor. And Shelley Duncan, who managed the Hops in 2015 and 2016 (including a championship in '15), is entering his second year as a big-league coach with the Toronto Blue Jays. Shawn Roof, Hillsboro's manager in 2017 and 2018, managed the Diamondbacks' Advanced-A Visalia affiliate to the California League Championship in 2019.

The Hillsboro Hops open the 2020 season on Wednesday, June 17th in Spokane. Opening Night at Ron Tonkin Field in Hillsboro will be Monday, June 22nd against Eugene. Season tickets, mini-plans and flex plans are now available at, or by calling 503-640-0887.
