Hessman's Homers Not Enough, Bats Fall to Toledo in Extras

July 9, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Louisville Bats News Release

TOLEDO, Oh. - The Louisville Bats were not able to hold their one-run lead entering the ninth inning Monday night and fell to the Toledo Mud Hens at Fifth Third Field, 4-3, in 10 innings. Bats' infielder Mike Hessman blasted two home runs against his former team for the third time this year in the losing effort. Louisville (45-48) falls to 1-5 in extra innings and 14-18 in one-run games this season. Toledo (39-54) improves to 5-8 in extra innings.

Hessman launched two home runs against the Mud Hens in the first two games of the season on April 4 and 5 at Louisville Slugger Field (his first two games as a Bat, as well) and this was his first multiple-home run game since. He now has 405 homers his professional career.

Seven of Hessman's team-leading 21 homers this season have come against the Mud Hens, and all of them have been solo home runs. In fact, 16 of his 21 home runs have been solo shots. Of his 38 RBI, 26 have come via the long ball.

The Bats led 3-2 when newly re-signed righty Kanekoa Texeira came in to try to close the game in the bottom of the ninth. Toledo would go on to load the bases and push the tying run across on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Russo to send the game to extras. Texeira was charged for the blown save in his first appearance for Louisville this season after making 34 appearances for team in 2012. His contract was purchased last week by the Reds from the Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic League.

In the tenth, Nick Christiani (5-3) surrendered an RBI single by Danny Worth to score Ben Guez and give the Mud Hens a 4-3 lead and the win.

Louisville righty Yohan Pino allowed two earned runs and struck out five batters in six innings in the no decision. Pino (2-6) scattered five hits and three walks, working out of trouble and stranding six Mud Hens.

Toledo southpaw Jose Alvarez allowed three earned runs in his eight innings in taking the no decision. Alvarez (5-4) struck out four and allowed seven hits, but did not walk any hitters.

Jess Todd (2-3) earned the win for tossing perfect ninth and tenth innings, including striking out the side in the extra frame.

Corky Miller went 2-for-4 for Louisville and Kristopher Negron accounted for the other Bats' run when he drove in Jason Donald with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

Avisail Garcia, Jordan Lennerton and Bryan Holaday all recorded multiple hits for Toledo.

The Bats and Mud Hens are back for the second game of their three-game set tomorrow at 7 p.m. Righty Chad Rogers (0-1, 4.50) makes his second career Triple-A start for Louisville and will be opposed by southpaw Pat Misch (3-6, 5.18) for Toledo.
