Hendrickson Leads Stars Past Lookouts, 3-1
August 14, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Huntsville Stars News Release
Huntsville, AL â One of the Brewers' prized prospects is just fine, and the Stars could not be happier. Ben Hendrickson, Milwaukee's 2002 Minor League Pitcher of the Year, threw six shutout innings in Huntsville's 3-1 win over Chattanooga on Thursday night at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars (29-24) remained one-half game up in the Southern League West second-half chase.
Hendrickson, removed after one inning in his last start with shoulder tightness, looked sharp on Thursday night, authoring six scoreless innings, fanning five while allowing five hits and one walk. Hendrickson (6-4) secured his sixth win and second straight against Chattanooga. No Lookouts runner advanced past second against him, and just three reached scoring position.
The Stars got all their runs in a sixth-inning rally, aided by two Lookouts errors. Pinch-hitter Chris Barnwell doubled to right, then Alejandro Machado dropped a sacrifice bunt down the third base line. Edwin Encarnacion fielded the ball but his throw sailed into the baseline, and Machado knocked the ball out of Jessie Gutierrez's glove as he reached first base. Machado was safe, and Barnwell scored all the way from second when the ball bounced away from Gutierrez. Dave Krynzel ripped a two-hop bullet toward second that skidded under Andrew Beattie's glove untouched for an error, sending Machado from first to third. J.J Hardy hit a roller to third, and Machado was thrown out at home. Then Corey Hart broke out of a 2-for-18 skid, doubling down the leftfield line to plate Krynzel and Hardy for a 3-0 lead.
The combination of Stars relievers Matt Parker and Ryan Miller closed the deal. Parker tossed two scoreless frames before hitting trouble in the ninth. Beattie led off with a solo homer to right, and one out later Jeff Bannon walked. After Jason Hill struck out, Wilmy Caceras singled up the middle. Encarnacion singled on the infield to load the bases, and Miller replaced Parker on the mound. On a 2-2 pitch, Guy Senjem swung and missed for strike three on a breaking ball that hit his foot and caromed back toward the mound. Miller picked up the ball and flipped it back to the plate for a forceout to end the game.
Steve Kelly (2-1) suffered the loss for the Lookouts, going six innings and surrendering three runs, one earned, on three hits and two walks while fanning seven. Miller notched his fourth save and second in as many days, fanning the only batter he faced.
Huntsville and Chattanooga complete the four-game set Friday night at Joe Davis Stadium. Stars righty Pedro Liriano (8-11, 3.71) meets Lookouts lefty Ty Howington (0-1, 12.00). Game time is 7:05 p.m. and a Thrivent Financial Fireworks Friday spectacular follows the game.
